David's Story

Life I started life in Oklahoma - a little town named Enid. We moved when I was 1 so no memories there. We went to Denver, CO and I got to second grade there. Then my dad became a teacher and we went out to sunny California to a little town called Corcoran. I attended Bret Harte elementary and John Muir Junior High. I was very interested in science and music. Then we moved to Marin County to a little town called Lagunitas. I attended Sir Francis Drake high school in San Anselmo. I was usually seen prowling the Drake corridors with a French Horn case in one hand and a big old brief case in the other (I wonder what ever happened to that old thing....) My great claim to fame however was to have graduated with long hair and a beard (what there was of it), supposedly the first in recorded Drake history! I had fun being in one of the great films Robert Johnson, the drama teacher helped us produce: "The Kid from NEPHEW" (That's: National Emergency Program to Halt Educational Wickedness). I played the clumsy robotized teacher. (Type casting?) I loved the music department! Darrell Parker and Perry Smith have been my heros ever since. I went on, 16 years later - thanks to getting drafted and sent to Germany - to getting a degree and license to teach music my self. It was the wrong decade for finding public teaching in the arts, however, and I still haven't been able to do much with it. I married the most wonderful woman on the planet, Renny - I found her in Germany - even though she's a Milwau...Expand for more
kee girl. We lived there for three years before coming back to the US. For a year and a half I taught music in the Catholic schools in Sheboygan, WI. My 4th graders made their own instruments as an introduction. But I couldn't support my family on what was basically self employment. By now we had three great kiddos. I worked as a tool & die assistant for too many years (it was supposed to be a tide-me-over). I took correspondence courses and regained by teaching license. We then took a huge leap of faith and moved to stay with Renny's elderly mom and start anew. It hasn't gone too bad. After a couple of interesting jobs my youngest daughter and I went into business together running a pie shop. It's called Sweetie Pies and it's located in Fish Creek, WI (not Sonoma) They won't let me put in the website name here. But since Sweetie Pies was taken by some place in Sonoma we had to go with Door County Pies. Just take out the spaces and add a dot com! My family is my proudest possession! Workplace My daughter has been working for a pie shop called Sweetie Pies for five years. This last March (2003) she told us that her employer was getting married and had to sell the business and that she was thinking of buying, but was worried about going it alone - I said "You've got a partner!" and we've never looked back. It is a wonderful place, cheery and very 50's and the pies are out of this world. We make them all the old fashioned way and our customers know it. Look for us at doorcountypies.com!
