David's Story
Life
Moved to Beaverton area senior year. Graduated Aloha High School. Went to U.S. Marine Corps boot camp and joined the Marine Corps Reserve unit in Salem, OR. Graduated Portland State with degree in mathematics. Started work for an engineering company in Portland. Reserve unit activated for 1st Gulf War, spent 6 mos. in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Honorable discharge. Went to Berkeley to get an M.S. in civil engineering, stayed for Ph.D. Liked academic environment, quit old job, got job as professor at Maryland. Married another Berkeley Ph.D., agriculture economics, met her in grad school (to be honest, at bars nearby grad school). Bought a house, live and work in Maryland. Achieved tenure. y and girl. Spent a year at M.I.T. on sabbatical leave (actually lived in Rhode Island). Spent a year at University of Hawai'i on sabbatical leave. Spare time: play guitar and sing in a band, fly fishing in Colorado, Montana, Pennsylvania, Maryland as often as possible. Like to travel (been to about 40 countries).
