David's Story

Life since High School: Penn State (McKeesport) flunked out of BSEE 1975, WCCC course work 1976, ASEET from CCAC 1978, BSEET from U. of Pittsburgh Johnstown 1981, MSEE from Rutgers University 1985 - same major previously flunked from. Worked for Post Gazzette (1969 delivery), Stratigos Restaurant (1972), Rainbow Hardware (1974 clerk), Radio Shack (1975 sales and technician), Madden Electronics (1976 technician), Robicon Corp (1978 technician), AT&T Bell Labs and other company units (1981 engineer STA, 1985 Member of Technical Staff), UNC Greensboro (1995 Adjunct Instructor), Regent Lighting (1995 Senior Engineer) and DurableToys.com (1995 owner), taught for Alamance Community College and ITT-Tech, and worked sometimes for a licensed electrician and licensed plumber (electrical controls). Worked dozens more jobs including grilling burgers at Wendys in 2023. Gainful employment over sustained time with over forty jobs was not a given except when self employed. Children born 1987, 1990 and 1992 can speak southern. NC resident since January 1988. You may know my nicknames Mudcat, Nervous Newton and Kernel Dave. I have two collections [now liquidated], both out of production items: Old Western Electric 40 year telephones and full sized station wagons. I have been a volunteer with the Red Cross through Amateur Radio Emergency Services, US Coast Guard Auxiliary (054-09-09, Retired, Coxswain Rating) and Knights of Columbus (Past Grand Knight- Council 3498). My [X]wife and I operated a retail web site: DurableToys.com which retailed larger wheel toys, leisure and outdoor products 1996-2009. Patronizing this business helped a needy family- ours. Since we worked from home we also home-schooled our children. Divorce crashed this business. Things changed in April of 2009 when [X]wife quit the business and quit the family suddenly, abandoning me, the home, the children, our livelihood and a puppy. Home schooling and most volunteer services ended during 2009...Expand for more
and I lost my house. My youngest then attended Burlington Christian Academy during Junior and Senior years for a 2011 graduation. He attended UNC Greensboro as my dependent with a full ride on my poverty in the honors dorm while I was a homeless single parent. It was a total success and I would do it again for him. For spring 2013 he studied in Mannheim Germany, graduated 2015. All three children are gainfully employed productive citizens. With the loss of the business in 2009, I have done many jobs of all sorts (now up to forty) without any real theme or continuity other than liquidating possessions. One result of major changes is better health but the other was a cool interval of living in a camper trailer at the beach. Then brief homelessness before buying a house in 2013. Son David married 2024. Daughter Kate married again 2023. Son Dan married 2014. Grandkids 2013, 2021, 2024. 2025, +2026. Working "retirement" jobs or not which provide some interesting purpose and reduce the use of retirement resources. My past hobby wannabe biz with various project just because can still be seen on Facebook as "FirstWord Mobility Engineering". For fun we camp a lot, hike, swim, ride our dirt bikes (including competition) and I roller blade and ice skate. I began to publicly claim retirement as of July 1, 2014. In 2015 I had a minor stroke which hosed my employ-ability even worse than my DSM-5 named personality defect. Wife Kris also now retired. Early in 2019 I completed seven years of frequent contact and courses with UNC-CH TEACCH "charm school" for adults on the Autism Spectrum. I maintain connected with a support group in which I try to aid the next generations in avoidance of some of the worst of my earlier life. It would have been good to have the benefit from that at a much younger place in the journey. Married in 2020 to Kristine O'Keefe, Peary HS '82, Rockville, MD. Thankful for apparently good health after some challenges in 2024.
