David's Story
Life
Grad. from SE Okla. St. U '87 w/ degree in Music Ed. Continued trumpet studies in NY w/ Jerome Callet, had lessons w/ Wynton Marsalis, & studied w/ John Haynie (NTSU) for 5 yrs.
Employed by school system here (Shreveport, LA) where I repair musical instruments. I also play trumpet professionally. Freelance - mostly classical. I'm a member of the Longview Symphony Orchestra. Recently scored the soundtrack to a short film using the "Theremin". The film is called, "Double Digits", so if you happen to be watching the Sundance Channel, maybe you'll see/hear it.
In the early 1990's I became interested in an interesting electronic musical instrument, the "theremin". I've done considerable research on the instrument and studied with the inventor's great-niece, Lydia Kavina (together, we premiered one of her compositions in Portland, ME).
This research also led me to another instrument which remained obscure for many years, the "Electro-Theremin". My research on this instrument ...Expand for more
has been used by ABC TV, NPR, Canadian TV (CBC); appeared in publications: "Stereo Review", "Etcetera Exotica", and "Mix" magazines. Recently, my Electro-Theremin website was awarded "Website of the Month" in the magazine, "Electronic Musician" (Feb. 2001 issue). And my research on the Electro-Theremin and its sole performer, Dr. Paul Tanner, was published in Albert Glinsky's book, "Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage", pub. 2000, U of Ill Press.
I've also developed several musical instruments, including a modern version of the Electro-Theremin I co-designed with Tom Polk. One of our instruments (we call it the "Tannerin") was commissioned by Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys) to use on his world tour. Our Tannerin received a nice write up in the New York Times. If you catch Brian Wilson's live show and hear "Good Vibrations", well, you'll hear our instrument!
