David's Story
Life
After high school graduation, I went to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for four years in Kings Point, NY graduating in 1997. During my four years there, one year was at sea while I visited the gulf coast, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, west coast, Alaska, and Hawaii. I got a degree in Marine Engineering. I then went on to become a commissioned officer in the Coast Guard. My first assignment was on a 378' cutter out of Alameda, CA (just outside of San Francisco). We did search and rescue, fisheries patrols, drug interdiction, and migrant interdiction. e for repair of vessels. I resigned from the Coast Guard in 2000 and moved back to West Virginia. I then sailed with the Merchant Marines for seven years traveling throughout the world. I was married to a wonderful Filipina in 2003 and we now have a little girl and two boys. To make for a better family life, I quit my career at sea in 2007 and settled in as a diesel engine service salesman with Wartsila. I worked out of my home in West Virginia for three years before moving to Muntinlupa City, Philippines for two years. Now I have been working for the past three years in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as a Port Engineer in charge of maintenance for the Arleigh Burke class destroyer, USS Halsey.
