David's Story
Weird finally learned and now understand my family and I have been activists. Never really thought of it that way. Because was raised it was just what we did, do the right thing.
Today going into my 68th year of life being an activist still is harder, so hard. I have fought for over 61plus years of my life standing up to r a c i s t r h e t o r i c. Now I am tired no longer the young man I used to be and to fight all this r a c i s t s h i t in 2025 and beyond. Over 60+ years and it is worse now for people who look like me in 2025. It was better in 1965 at 6 years old because then I was listened too and heard. NOW? The pain my heart is breaking. Worse then in 1975-76 when we MHS endured forced busing. The fellow schoolmates who came to talk to me for solace that year almost broke me. To see some of these strong guys weeping when being called the names, brown & black. To this day still makes my tears well up. But now in 2025?
Hi can I ask a serious question? Why am I back before 1964 before "1964 civil rights bill & 1965 voting rights act was passed? Being r a c i a l l y profiled and not allowed entrance to a Fry's Food Store in 2025 Safeway Store and other places by Black-Americans? Breaks my heart. This AZ normal.
Why have so many Chicanos and other Hispanics chose to be "Cau casian? (white)"
I chose to be a Chicano at 6 years old. When we moved to almost all Cau casian Neighborhood. My New School Teachers confronted me with that.
And I said No! 6 years old in 1965, yea. After 1964 Civil Rights Bill & 1965 Voting Rights Act was passed!
My parents said do be what you want to be.
Since all the name-calling began then in1965 in Maryvale.
Moved from downtown Phoenix, AZ. Where no problem there of what I looked like.
Share this question with other Hispanics especially dark-skinned Hispanics, please. Have Never understood that. hmmmmmmmm
H.S.girlfriend we were kids and we behaved like one .Me an idiot stopped hanging around most of my friends because "of duh?" I had a girlfriend.Sheesh a dummy forgot was a kid, lol.
Wow found out one reason she was me "unbelievable!". Chose me to upset her r a c i s t parents because I am Mexican-American-Chicano. My H.S. sweetheart First Love, sad Have never told what her Father said to me after I turned 18? Have me arrested for stat****y r*** I freaked out. Changed me completely on how I would be with females. Scared me straight.Never dated anyone 18, 19, 20, 21 after that!
We were together when I was a sophomore (15), she (14) freshman so kids but wow
Learned some friends who are of the opposite s e x are just meant to be that "friends
Taught it is what you do, not what you say Everybody does that talk! Big deal it means nothing.
It's your works that are important. Not talking but doing;-)
Standing up for what is right, is who I am. You all know that. And the trouble it has gotten me in at times. Even have lost jobs, family, friends, teammates, standing up for another & others.
My senior year the rise of so much more h a t r e d ,r a c i s m and v i o l e n c e i was surrounded with from the forced busing.
It was really bad compared to my freshman, sophomore, and junior years, whew.
But don't know how to be any other way. And don't want to be ever!
My elementary, junior high school, and high school years tough, so much damage out of school and in school.
(personal stuff & Major e f f e d up traumatic childhood s e x u a l, verbal, emotional, physical etc. a b u s e s life I guess, MHS girlfriend never knew, no one knew no one til my 20's E f f e d up.
Military changed me. Made me less. That's saying a lot considering where I was already.
Learned is not for everyone. I chose the wrong field Meteorology could not move to another field stuck. That destroyed me I really liked the military. Just not my occupation. The Traumatic experiences from my job then, changed who I had been, forever.
And really had no athlete friends except the ones, athletes of color. After junior year began hanging around BB teammates because we wanted a chance to win state!. And that changed after senior basketball season ended, No more teammates. They never had my back. Just wante...Expand for more
d me to fight coach F for them. Coach F ended my basketball career. Told college coaches I was a troublemaker so D1 letters of intent pulled at times look at them, sad.
Only wanted to play BB. I Never considered juco So no baseball track and another sport lol did not play in high school offered scholarship but my love was BB. Basketball teammates never had my back, let Coach F berate, put his hands on me, etc...
Not one stood by my side. So you all know I quit during halftime of our last game because Coach F changed how we had been playing. He sat me down during 2nd quarter because I told him we would lose his way. Behind Coach F back they(teammates) agreed but said nothing.Again never had my back. I came back because our main players with tears welling up in their eyes begged me too.I was already changed clothes. Why came out of the locker room just before the 2nd half started.
Still hung around one former teammate because we were of color. Had that in common.
I really was a nerd not a jock. Just was athletic so why not. But really not much in common with them. So most my friends were not in athletics anyways and it's still that way.
It was Because of The Standing Up Part of me that they were not, but wanted me to do for them what they would not do for themselves. That was so effed up.
They knew it "my teammates and they so took advantage of it. It changed me, and with the military trauma and continued abuses as an adult.
Because of what they and Coach F did, but like a dumb young kid I did it.
Sometimes stepped up and got my friends and acquaintances in trouble(sorry guys)
The worst was my senior year when a local little gang were continually picking on this small freshman kid.
I walked over by myself and stepped in, Started chastising them. Not noticing they were surrounding me.
R Q and some others saw and immediately walked over.
And surrounded them. Knew none of this till after when they told me about it. I was just so focused on what had been going on to the kid.
The leader was ready to stab me with something when R Q said "Q look Q look he's reaching for his back pocket look!"
RQ tagged one kid who was trying to make there leader stab me from that gang.
By that time though quitter MHS coach now VP W K came up.
He took us both to his office.
Was going to be suspended (no fighting happened suspension?, weird huh) till a told him "look check his back pocket."
He had a sharpened can opener the old hooked style ones.
He was immediately expelled because he had done this before.
What happened next is what I am so sorry for :-(
R Q had heard there was going to be retaliation against me and him. So we didn't go to school the next day.
What happened is the the little gang was looking for us and since they didn't find us stabbed someone they thought was there and a friend(which was) but not there! Sorry you know who you are.
I stayed away another day RQ went back and was shot at it and some others.
One thing lead to another and RQ and I for awhile were always together to watch each others back. Shotguns in his trunk for quick access necessary if needed.
Weird though it just sort of stopped ended. Have my theories but those are for me;-)
Standing up back then and NOW is a Big Part of My Character.
Actually my family heritage/legacy! Standing Up for others. Some of you know that of my family:-) We did a lot for you all. Some of you member and thanks for that. ;-)
Really did enjoy this time!!!!!!! Different! Unique! Had to member most of this time for me was fun.
My mom from the time we moved to Maryvale and started elementary school and beyond use to tell me this saying. "Sticks and stones may break your bones but names will never hurt you!" Of course we all know now a Lie!. You know did not know I was different till we moved there. Really??? no clue! Not till I was 6 years old in 2nd grade there, wow!
The life altering events at MHS with the effects of years of physical, verbal, emotional, mental, & childhood r**e&gr**ming with teen traumas took there tow. Then Adult Ra cist stuff added more.
I just didn't know til later.
Thank You All who have helped me remember the fun back then. And it was fun.
