David's Story
School
When I think about school, I must say that I have spent most of my life in school. I began school in 1958 at the age of 6 and I have been in some type of school or learning institution ever since. I would like to talk about my elementary years but, I am saving that for my book "Gravy Macaroni". (You may request a copy, if you are curious.) Therefore, let me talk a little about my time in school from grades 8-12.
I attended Lee-Davis High School from September 1965 through June 1970. I would like to be able to say that it was all fun and games, but I can not. Instead I must say that it was a time of growing up and becoming a man. I did indeed have fun and meet some of the most wonderful people one could ever imagine meeting. ...Expand for more
However, I had one problem, and that is that I was scared. I was just plain scared of everybody and every thing. I thought everybody was against me. I was a walking "Barney Fife" of the old Andy Griffith show.
Because I was so scared, I can't say that I had a crush on any one in particular. I was afraid to look at the girls. Because I was so scared, I can't say that any of the boys were really my friends. I was afraid to stand up to them when they challenged me (as boys often do at that age.) Therefore, for five years I ran like a scared rabbit through high school, finally walking across the stage in June of 1970 to collect my diploma. As I walked across that stage, guess what.......I was scared and shaking like a leaf in the wind.
