David's Story
I was away from Enumclaw in my Senior year, so missed out on some of the fun at home, While everyone was partying at home and looking to the future, I was rambling around in New Zealand as a Rotary Exchange Student.
After returning from New Zealand as an exchange student in my Senior year (1973-1974), I went to WSU in Pullman for four years. There I studied Geology and upon completion of my degree in 1978 found that you could not work in that field without a Masters Degree.
I moved back to the Westside and went to work for Boeing for about three years ¿ mostly in technical jobs that did not require a degree. After about 8 months I went back to school at the UW. I studied geotechnical engineering for a while and then shifted over to environmental science and engineering for my Masters Degree. I finished there in 1981.
I left the Boeing Company shortly after and headed to Europe where I combined travel, skiing and research in Sweden into a very memorable 17 month stay.
Upon my return to the US in 1982, I found that finding work was a very hard thing. I helped my parents with their property, did some consulting for the Forest Service, and then worked for a year or so for a failing consulting firm. In 1984 I was hired on to the State of Washington in the Department of Ecology in Olympia. For the next three years I ran a program that evaluated the severity of acid rain in Washington and its impacts on ecosystems across the state.
I then shifted jobs at Department of Ecology to work related to water quality protection and forest management. Then on to supervision, where my staff assisted communities and the business world with solving other types of water quality issues. After almost 12 years of this work, I changed jobs and now work for the Department of Natural Reso...Expand for more
urces in Sedro Woolley where I have been managing state owned lands for the last 8 years.
I married Allison Snow in July 1986. She was a teacher in Deming (small town east of Bellingham) when we met at a wedding of a mutual friend (Carol Gunderson) in Enumclaw. She moved to Olympia after we were married and worked for a while at the Legislature. Then she went back to teaching for about 4 years, then took off on a variety of interesting and challenging jobs and business ventures. She now works for a non-profit in Bellingham that coordinates health related efforts in the community.
We had a blissful 5 years together before our first child Ryan was born in 1991. He is now a senior at Sehome High School in Bellingham where we now live. He also attends Whatcom Community College were he will soon have his AA. Ryan is a bright young man with an intense interest in the way things are in the world. In 1994 our second child, Rachel, was born. She is now a freshman and is already an accomplished artist. She also plays volleyball for Sehome HS.
I have had a number of interests over the years including writing and playing music (recorded two albums), building and restoring houses, repairing cars, hiking, skiing, rafting, kayaking, running, and lots of travel. Throughout the years I have studied photography. I am working hard to create products that people will enjoy having in their homes and businesses.
We live in a lovely hilltop home just outside the city of Bellingham and really enjoy the lifestyle. Over all we have been healthy and happy. I had a scare this year with prostate cancer, but after surgery this fall I seem to be on the mend and headed down a healthier path.
