David's Story

Update 06 Jun 2016: Finally! A real rainy season. 2014 and 2015 rainy seasons were fairly dry but this year it's been raining almost every day. Usually for about an hour. The rain makes everything grow much better. We are currently eating our own Papaya and Plantains. The Orange and Grapefruit trees are forming fruit. The Passion Fruit vines are growing fast but still have a way to go. One of the 3 Cashew Nut trees was full of flowers this year but I do not expect nuts until next year. Incredible number of Mangoes on the big tree should be ready in just a few more days. Life is good. Update 27 Jan 2016: The cantaloupe and watermelon were great but I need to relocate the garden. Already pulled 25 pink grapefruit off that little tree and there are 9 more not quite ready. Been living in the new house for just over a year. Got my new Panama ham radio license and finally got back on the radio last July. Panama seems to be a great location for ham radio. Got married last November and I really think this one is going to last. It does seem funny that I am so compatible with someone who is not easy to speak with. Yerica is learning English faster than I am learning Spanish but we both have a long way to go. Thank God for Google Translate which does a great job translating English to Spanish but not so great from Spanish to English. Got to remember to get some of the wedding photos posted to Facebook. Planted a lot of Verenera (you may know it as Bourganvilla). The plants on the west side of the gate are about ten feet tall and beautiful but the plants on the east side are pretty scrawny. All planted at the same time and watered and fertilized the same. We've already found and transplanted about a dozen Papaya trees from the compost heap. Never had them before I moved to Panama but I love Papayas. Everyone who has been here agrees that my Mango tree is the biggest they've ever seen. Yes, I do have one, and only one, regret. I regret not having made the move to Panama much sooner. Update 30 Apr 2015: Finished building the big house in December of 2014 and have been living in it since then. I never had a decent sized place to live before so I overdid this one a bit but it sure is nice to have all this space. Besides the normal basics, we have a hobby room, library, and storeroom. The original small 2 room house is now a guest house. Many photos on my Facebook page. The cantaloupes are almost ready to eat. There are a bunch of watermelon but they seem to be about a month behind the cantaloupe. As usual, more mangoes and plantains than we can use ourselves. 2 year old, six foot high grapefruit tree is starting to produce fruit. Been here 16 months now, having a great time, and never been sorry that I made the move. Update 28 March 2014: I know many following my posts were thinking that I'd never get around to actually moving. To tell the truth, I was beginning to wonder myself. However, it has finally happened. Moved to Panama on 07 Dec 2013 and into my new house in Penonome about a week later. Designed a small 2 ...Expand for more
room house to get me by for awhile. Loner that I am, I thought it would be enough. Now that my girlfriend and her son have joined me, it is a bit snug. Penonome is wonderful. There is a breeze 24 hours a day. Sometimes soft and sometimes, like today, really blowing. I heard that someone in the area lost a roof today. The wind sure brought down a bunch of my mangoes and cashews. Got a bunch of cashew nuts now but waiting till they're all down before roasting. Been eating our own mangoes and plantains for about a month. Also made some juice from the cashew fruit. It's still dry season here and rainy season will make it a different world but I seriously doubt that I'll be returning to the States. Update 09 Sep 2013: Chiriqui Province is having a few problems right now. Purchased a second, one acre parcel about ten minutes west of Penonome, Panama, about 2 hours west of the Canal. Currently building a small house until I can afford what I really want. The small house is livable as of last week. My brother, Rich, who lives in Atlanta, is here in Colorado helping me load the shipping container. Shipping container, 40 footer, is scheduled to be picked up from my back yard tomorrow. It will stay in the container company storage yard until I take the final load over. Have not listed my current house for sale but already have two people seriously interested. One will be over tonight to, hopefully, make an offer. As soon as the house is sold and I've packed up the last items, it will be off to Panama. Permanently. Update 18 Oct 2010: Back in Colorado again. Did not find a house that was right for me. Am buying an acre in the Chiriqui Provence of Panama at an elevation of 2,900 feet. Land has a heck of a view but now I will have to build a house. Keeping busy looking at house plans. Update 26 Sep 2010: FINALLY! I now have my permanent Panama Pensionado Visa. I am currently in Panama and will start looking for a house tomorrow. Life Started at the University of Denver for EE. Lasted 2 Quarters. Washed dishes. Sold shoes. Spent 4 years in the Army leaving as SSGT E-6 in '67 after 2 years in Panama and 1 in Nam. Went to computer school. Worked as a computer programmer for 4 years. Owned and operated an A&W Drive-In up in Douglas, Wyoming for 4 years. Spent 4 years in the Navy as a Radioman spending 2 years in Panama, 1 in Iceland, and 1 aboard ship in the Med. Managed a gas station. Returned to computer programming as a contractor for 3 years. From 1985 to Aug 2007, was a computer specialist with the Bureau of Land Management here in Denver. When we have a bad fire season, I occasionally go out as a wildland fire dispatcher on 2 week assignments. I retired, from BLM, on 31 Aug 07 and am in the slow process of trying to pack everything (I am a collector). After I get everything in storage and sell the house, I'll be looking for a retirement home in Panama returning once in a while to visit friends, relatives, and do fire details. I'll miss the mountains but am really looking forward to some wonderful beaches.
