David's Story

LIFE After Groves I attended Oakland University and got a degeree in Secondary Education [I always wanted to be a teacher] and Mathematics. I started teaching in Detroit and got drafted in 1970. With my education the Army in its infinite wisdom sent me to Germay to play with their largest ATOMIC Missile the Pershing II in 1971. I worked in Missile Maintence where I earned the rank of Sargent and then released me in Feb 1973 to the National Guard for 6 years. When I returned to the States I married the following year and had 4 fantastic daughters. After 19.5 years I was divorced in 1994 and spent a few years re-entering the world. Today I'm engaged. MY KIDS Amy the oldest with the quickest mind is a night charge nurse at a hospital in or near Ypsi. The next oldest Meagan works transport at Macomb General Hospital. She is perhaps the most sensitive of the girls but hides it with a tough exterior. The third oldest and perhaps the most level headed is Erin who graduated from Alma - Cum Lauda with departmental honors (Psychology) and later got a Masters Degree from Wayne State. She was working for St Johns Hospital then became a director in a company working with the hospitals. Lauren the youngest graduated from Alma and was writing for Groupon in Chicago (was Philly) Now Lauren is in Michigan writing for Rocket Mortgage. MY WORK LIFE I started working at age 14 by caddying at Knollwood Country Club where by my freshman year in college I was assistant caddymaster. My family moved to Palatine Ill. and I sold religious books in Maryland for 4 weeks then returned to work in a Chicago warehouse for Playscool. The next summer I managed a warehouse for Three Worlds (Learn, Play and Grow). While at Oakland Univestiy I worked in the kitchen hotpacking and running the dishwasher and ran the night office of Continuing Education four nights a week. Upon graduating I taught in Detroit Public schools where I retired after 35.5 years having taught at Drew Junior High School (opened school up 1970, Winterhalter Middle School (1973-1981) and then MacKenzie High School. During this time I was drafted into the Army (1971) for 2 years and spent another 6 years part time in the MIchigan Natioanal Guard. I also had various part time jobs such has a worker on the Ford Engine Line (1973), security guard, and various other summer jobs till 1986. At that time I hired on at Murrays Discount Auto Stores where I worked part time as a stocker, cashier, parts man and finally as an assistant manager when I started working full time after retiring from teaching. Then for four months I was night manager at Dequindre and Twelve Mile store in Madison Heights MI when they went 24 hours. M...Expand for more
y body rebelled and I stepped down. When the Clawson MI store opened I helped open it then after a year and a half I went to the store at Six Mile east of Newburgh in Madison heights where I had to retire in Jan 2020 because of Covid since my better half is in the highest risk category. GROVES YEARS I knew and enjoyed many people. Some from the band, wrestling, tennis and crosscrountry. I worked hard in the library and with Paul G. with the lunch movies and av. My experiences with the people here and also Dr Ruth Edberg who in her Humanities class touched the Humanity in all of us and gave me an opportunity to see the human properties/characteristics that make us all part of the human race. Her insights have served me well all these years and taught me to love the person but hate the choices/actions that are not in the best interests of the Human Race. Everyone taught me a lot about myself. OAKLAND UNIVERSITY I learned more about myself and grew even more. I added bridge to my many games that I knew and made more friends adding more to my knowledge of myself. Mathematics and Secondary Eduacation were in my blood and with philosophy, a few real chacters that called me friend and a couple of interesting girl friends and the love of my life that I pushed away helped build the basis of the man I was becoming. PERSONAL My heros grow and have a big influence on how I meet life....... Martin Luther King Jr, John and Robert Kennedy, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Christ, Mohammed, John Lennon, Johnny Cash, and Wayne Dyer. I have not met a person that I have not liked but some whose beavior/actions/choices I have hated. I taught a student in high school who after he graduated went out and killed a State Trooper. I believe in the snactity of life but also believe in the death penalty. Each person must deal with their choices but we can help each other but only if we remember that we all have a part of the ETERNAL TRUTH and others have other parts of it. We are eternal beings on a human journey to grow and the choices we make should help us in this trip. Some of you will GROK this and others will hopefully think about it. I have made my mistakes and have tried to learn from them. Some have been harder or more expensive to learn than others. Still Life and God have been good to me. My body hasn't given up on me yet and I still enjoy the beauty around me. Nature and Man are part of the beauty we have all been given. It's such a shame that we don't stop, see and enjoy it. I try to research all elections ( I have made everyone since 1968 including school board etc.) and seriously considered every choice in these important events for our country.
