David's Story
Life
I'm married with a son and live in Fairfax. Moved there in 2003 after about 15 years in DC. I avoid Montgomery County at all costs :-) I haven't made it to any of the reunions--although I did think about the last one. I guess the whole Frederick venue just left me cold in the end.
After Churchill I spent two years at University of Michigan as an electrical engineering major and quickly realized that, in spite of being good at it, I really hated math (an unfortunate complication for an EE). About that same time, the university suggested I take a semester off to figure out what I wanted to do instead. What I did was transfer to the University of Wisconsin in Madison where I worked really hard at becoming a professional student. After six years and three degrees (Political Science, History, and Communication Arts--Film) my parents finally convinced me that it was time to come back to the real world. Enough time had been spent flipping burgers, writing record and show reviews, working at the local community radio station and drinking an incredible amount. Madison rocks!
So I moved back to DC, lived in my folk's basement for a year, saved up and bought a condo downtown (Kalorama). I worked as a lobbyist in the defense industry for a few years and then decided to take a shot at running the foundation and day-to-day operations for my college fraternity. The job called for a move to Boston, so I rented the condo and moved up a Brownstone right off of Kenmore Square. The good news is that it was three blocks to Fenway; the bad news is that it was surrounded by Boston University (what a horrible school--think AU with even less friendly people). I never understood the rationale of spending $35,000 a year in tuition to attend the 6th best school in Boston!
I moved back to DC (and the condo) after I got married in 1997. Although I've been married almost nine years, I've known my wife for about 23 years. I met her within the first couple of months I...Expand for more
was in Madison and had a pretty good idea she was the girl I was going to marry right away. What happened in between then and 1997 is an incredibly long story!
As I already mentioned, we bought a house and moved to Fairfax in 2003. Quite the shock going from 900 square feet (my bachelor pad condo) to 6000 square feet--I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the basement. We had our first child, Gunnar, May 20 of 2005. He's pretty much my favorite person of all time! Marcia and I always comment that we don't know what we did with ourselves before he was born.
I work for marketing firm that specializes in not-for-profits and associations. If I wasn't so lazy, I'm sure I wouldn't still be working for somebody else--something I need to work on in the next couple of years. Enough about work.
For those who remember me, I'm still into movies and music. The one thing I have done with the basement is create a dedicated listening room for my (very fragile) stereo. I've probably got about 2,500 CDs and another 2,000 records lining the walls. I've become a pretty dedicated audiophile, which is really like a disease. I've got a pair of pretty high end tube amps that, while they often sound like the hand of God, also throw off enough heat to cook dinner. If anyone's got so inclined feel free to check my system out at the "audio asylum" (google it and check out Inmate systems--badgerdms).
Some current favorite bands are The Drive By Truckers (who did a killer show at the 9:30 club recently), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Calexico, Iron & Wine, Old 97s, Cat Power, Franz Ferdinand, and pretty much anything they play on the Plan Nine Podcast (think Detroit rock--everything descended from Iggy Pop and the MC5). Who would have guessed that the Ipod may actually save independent music!
Anyway, enough prattling on from me. Just trying to use up my entire allotment of space. My nickname from the audio asylum above plus aol is how you find me :).
Cheers!
