David's Story
Life
After graduation along with many classmates I went to Dutchess. Graduated in 1966. Didn't much want to be drafted so joined the navy.Spent four years in the service and made three trips to the Tonkin Gulf on aircraft carriers. Married Lesia in 1969. The next year left her in California for 6 months while on my last WestPac. Left the navy in 1971 and went to Florida State University. Finished undergraduate 12/72 and moved to Atlanta. Been here ever since.
We have two children Philip 30. He's come off the road and now sells bonds but still plays gigs with his band, Rocket 350. And Elizabeth 26 lives in Boston while her husband is in dental school. They are both Bulldogs having graduated from UGA.
For the past year it seems we've spent most of our time running from hurricanes. We evacuated three times from our condo at Navarre Beach, Florida, Ivan, Dennis and now Katrina. Luckily we did not as planned sell our home in Georgia or we would have been homeless last year. Have to question the intelligence of anyone who buys waterfront property on a barrier island, not my smartest move.
2006 has been a good year at the beach, no hurricanes. Last year's stress had a definite impact on my fight with Parkinson's. Yeah, that's right. Michael J. Fox and I are tight, both fighting this stupid brain disease. Actually I don't know him but I do have Parkinson's, known I had it since 1999. Ended my career three years ago. But so far I'm pretty lucky. And there is great hope for improved treatment and maybe a cure. So since you read this far, if it isn't asking too much, wish me luck and say a prayer. I can use all the help I can get.
May 2007: So far so good. Go for a semi annual check up next month. Not much new, shake a little more and more often. But so far walking okay and not using the handicap parking spaces. Leave those for those who really need them.
First grandchil...Expand for more
d, Grace Elizabeth is due July 5. Many of my classmates are way ahead with grandchildren but Grace will be in line for most spoiled.
Grace arrived two days early, July 3. 21 inches, 8 pounds 1 ounce beautiful blue eyes . Tuesday's child is full of grace and she is.
Added a photo of Grace on her first birthday. She's walking, not too steady but walking. She is a doll.
2008 YTD has been good. Shaking a little more but medication is still effective, knock wood.
Finished the kayak last year but took it out in the Gulf and surf for the first time this Spring. Didn't flip over, haven't mastered rolling but am pretty good at flooding it. Had to swim and drag it back to shore. That was exciting! I'm older but not a lot smarter.
November 2008 Had a terrific Thanksgiving, posted a photo if you are interested. Hurricane season on the panhandle was almost a non event which was a break. Some beach erosion but no damage.
Slight medication change in September. No improvement but reduced the total daily dosage which is a good thing. However when it wears off it gets very strange. Middle of the night couple of weeks ago with the lights out I managed to trip over my own feet and took a header into the tub. Slammed 190 pounds on my left elbow and knee. So I'm sitting sprawled in the tub with an artificial fern in my lap when Lesia runs in, takes one look and cracks up. Guess you had to be there. Didn't seem funny to me.
May 1 2010. Thursday had my semi annual visit to my neurologist in Birmingham Alabama. Nothing new to report. Same old same old "exciting progress is being made". Yeah right. Been hearing that same song for the last ten years. But I'm holding my own and can't complain.
In March we added a grandson to the family, Caleb Allen,10 pounds 4 ounces. My new goal is to see my grandkids graduate college.
Just recently learned about Bob Banks, damn. Who else have we lost?
