David's Story

College was interesting: Did a couple of things before settling down into computer science: Swim team (20000 yards a day), French, Geology, Math, and even ran for ASB president. In the computer science field it was always a bit interesting: When I officially declared the major, Assembler (advanced class) became my first language because all the beginner classes were full. Weirdly all the systems manuals were always missing, so I was always having to teach myself how to navigate around the back recesses of the CDC, PDP, and HP systems. This led to mastery of assembler and discovery of many interesting findings as to how different computer systems worked. Wrote this in my spare time in college: One example I present here, was on the CDC system they gave students very little space to store work which normally amounted to about one program at a time. But I figured out how to grab more space by taking advantage of a little known feature. This involved writing a special shell as an assembler program which as part of its purpose, grabbed giant blocks of space and pre-reserved them for future use. I further extended the program a bit more which I won't go into detail here, but the end result is I was able to then store many programs (home work assignments) across the system, and reuse code. Reuse of code was unheard of back in the early 80's. But it made my life much easier and gave me more time to experiment. When I graduated, my roommate asked for my 'shell' scripts (asse...Expand for more
mbler Executables) so he could take advantage of these tricks, so I gave him my Magtape. And the system admins were having all kinds of trouble trying to load it onto his account. Well it turns out I was doing things student's weren't supposed to be doing. The trouble is no one had ever bothered telling me I wasn't supposed to do that. (Nor had they bothered to set all the appropriate permission masks apparently). So for him they granted him a limited access so the shell only worked on his account and not to the full extent I'd had. The above program fit the following categories: Restricted Shell, Worm, Trojan. COMPASS. Picked up a patent: Patent date Issued Oct 6, 1998 Patent issuer and number us 5816820 Product tied to patent was released with Windows 95 on launch day. --------- March 2022: This march, I participated in a group walk and walked 19 miles straight. The trail started in New Freedom, PA (39.733648, -76.705010) and my turn around point was in Seven Valleys, PA (39.872937, -76.741736) or just look here: Heritage rail trail since it won't let me post the walk you will have to figure it out from the lat/long points i gave. Total mileage I walked was 19 miles straight. This is the farthest I have ever walked in one day as far as I can remember. Took 7 hours. Nov 22 I walked 25 miles on the same trail. To our dismay and surprise, we had the wind against us in both directions and the temperatures were in the low 20's the whole way, with sleet too
