David's Story

Hello everyone. I am now a young 74 years old and thinking of all the experiences I had back at Woodson. I will start off my “life events update” with these basic stats. Family: Married 43 years now. I met my wife at a ski resort where we both lived. I ran my art studio from my chalet and raced in local snow and grass ski events. Later, when the vacation housing market basically crashed and the purchase of artwork was put on the back burner by most people, we moved to Florida. I was hired as an artist by McDonnell Douglas Corporation at the Kennedy Space Center and worked on Space Shuttle, Space Station and Air Force Space projects. I still have a large painting that I did for McDonnell Douglas, hanging in the KSC Visitor Center. I have artwork in the form of minted coins, that have literally been in space and orbited several times and returned to the earth aboard a Space Shuttle. Both our children were born (Launched) at Port Canaveral Hospital. My daughter has her own, very successful, art and design related company. My son, an electrical engineer, is now the booster lead among other things for NASA at KSC for the current Artemis-1 rocket. This rocket system is the largest ever built by anyone. He just received a coveted, Astronaut presented, “Silver Snoopy” award for outstanding performance on (Aug. 5, 2022). We have three generations in my family that worked at KSC; My father, my son and myself. I have 4 grand kids now, 2 girls and 2 boys. What have I been doing for the past 55 years? I worked at or owned advertising agencies. Have served as an art director for publications and other companies. I was in the Army with a Secret clearance and honorable discharge. Had a Top Secret clearance after the Army at KSC. My artwork matured into owning my own art and architectural artifact design and production company. This company culminated in a marketing support and trade show design and construction company. Our “Tormoen Marketing Support Group” had the experience to develop, manage, implement and support a broad range of marketing activities for prim...Expand for more
arily high technology companies, from small start-ups to established Fortune 200 companies. My wife, 2 children and other family members and friends worked in the company. We helped launch the public awareness of “Wireless LAN“, HDTV, and many other mainstream technologies worldwide. Also, displayed other lesser known technologies like camera-less actor 3D motion capture systems used for movie productions such as Iron Man. Our company generated all the design elements; artwork, 3D artwork, supporting animations, interactive displays, structural design, fabrication of those concepts and shipped and physically managed the construction of the displays all over the world. Think “The Home of the Future” at Epcot Center, Florida and you will get an idea of the scale of these projects… We actually did a “Wireless Home of the Future” exhibit that ran for 5 years… So, your class pick, of selecting me as the most “artistic” had truly come to fruition in many ways… Trips for my company work and pleasure: China, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Puerto Rico, Canada and all over the USA I have had many extraordinary events and experiences in my life before and after graduating from Woodson. Even my closest Woodson friends back then don‘t have a clue about my involvement to this day. The real outcome of some of the events “after” graduation are still stunning to me. Currently, I do a lot of artwork, castings and manufacturing of products for what I want to do, in my large studio next to our home. I will undoubtedly be creating something until the day I die. My projects tend to be large, whether they are on canvas, sculpted, welded, constructed, etc. I do this for myself… the end products are not intended to be sold… I have already had a life time of doing commercial art work. I am just enjoying the “doing” of the art, not the end product. I hope that you are happy, safe… and experiencing the warmth of your loved ones. Please leave me a note on how you are doing. David - I will post some photos soon.
