David's Story

Life BIOGRAPHY David Joseph Travis is the oldest of the eight children of J. Samuel and Louise Travis. Mr. and Mrs. Travis are currently deceased but resided in New Jersey for fifty years, initially in Newark and later in East Orange. David was born and raised in Newark, where he completed elementary and high school in the Newark Public Schools. Following high school, he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1958, after attending Jersey City State College and the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa. He taught in the New York City for two years before entering the Army in 1960. Subsequently, he served twenty years in the Army moving from the rank of private to major before his retirement in 1981. While in Army, he served two tours in the Vietnam War receiving some fourteen decorations, including the Bronze Star for Valor, the Purple Heart and the Cross-of Gallantry of Vietnam. In addition, while in the Army, he completed graduate work related to his Army duties at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs, Princeton University,Graduate School of Arts and Science, New York University and the School of Jounalism, University of Wisconsin: accumulating graduate credits equivalent to a Ph. After retirement from the Army, David returned to Jersey City State and Montclair State Universities to complete courses required for certification for Teacher of Science in the state of New Jersey. David retired from the Newark School System in 1997 after spending over 15 years at Science High School, Newark, NJ. There, he taught physics, chemistry, and the earth sciences and served on Administration and Curriculum Committees. His wife, Louise Frederick Melvin Travis, retired four years earlier as an administrator in the Jersey City School system, after 34 years of service. Both are enjoying their retirement with a number of activities and pursuits: volunteer work at church, dining out at various restaurants, participating in different exercise programs, attending computer classes and informative workshops, taking part in book clubs, traveling and touring in and out of the country, dancing out often and going out to the theater, concerts and shows on a regular basis David and Louise reside in Maplewood, NJ. They have three adult children: Mrs. June Melvin Mickens of Burtonsville, MD, Mrs. Nancy Travis Kofie of Laurel, MD and David J. Travis, Jr. of North Plainfield, NJ. They have two grandchildren.
