David's Story
Life
It is odd to think that our next class reunion will be in the year 2017! Everything in life as we know it now will have changed so much by then. I think about how my life is now, and I am just amazed. AMAZED. When I think about what has happened in the past 40 some years, I realize how much time changes and heals. Growing up in Sheridan for someone that was so different and creative was the kiss of death. Being my friend during my high school years was an act of courage. When I think about those years and all the bullying that I took and survived...I am so surpised that I never got beat up. Even at the last class reunion there were echos of those days...which seemed to fade away as my classmate came to understand that I would never tolerate such conduct.
Having grown up in Sheridan, and having both parents having grown in Sheridan, the city brings a lot of heritage to my life. My parents are both gone. Also, my brother Dan, who suffered for so long, passed. Having no parents or grandparents left gives you an orphan complex. My sister Terri now lives in our family home in Sheridan, and Nicky lives with his wife in the North Main area. Nicky has a daughter, Stephanie. There are a number of Voogd's that still live in that area. I travel to Sheridan with my cousin Anita for rodeo every year, and several different times during the year.
I live a dream life....my domestic partner and I are muiti-millionaires. This allows us an unusual way to live our lives. We have homes in Denver, Miami, and New York City. We share our lives with our dog...so named Sheridan Emerson Kafati-Batarse Voogd. It was amazing that no one had taken that name with the AKC.
Work
I have done so many things in my life. Went to college, got my MBA, worked in the corporate world some...but everything has always been enhanced by my work in the fashion and entertainment industry. I moved from Sheridan 4 days after we graduated from Sheridan High School. I started producing beauty pageants later that same year. Crazy times! I hold the record for being the youngest state franchice holder for Miss Universe. I have so many great friends from the beauty pageant industry...more than from High School and College. My most famous friend is Halle Berry, who is beyond an A lister. She helped me so much when I decided to open my company some 12 years ago. in the day. I really have not done anything other than judge for a number of years. This year I am helping a family friend, from Sheridan, in her quest to become Miss America.
My first really big step in becoming a entrepreneur came in the form for several small modeling schools in the midwest, which I sold in 1986. I established my schools and began building really great relationships with modeling agents in the USA and around the world. I have great connections in the industry, which helps my current situation, and helped me learn so much about how the fashion industry works. I still work with over 550 agents located around the world. I have great friends at IMG, Ford, Wilhemina, Next, Trump, Elite, and so many more. Moving to a big city opened my world to franchised modeling and acting schools...and jetted my life into a future the would eventually bring big success financially.
I started as an employee...which later lead to several moves, both physicallly and up the corporate later. When I relocated to be closer to the family, I became a partner. My connections grew, the money grew, and my desire to not be a partner grew. So...I sold my part of the partnership and established my current company. By this time, I had established myself as an expert in the franchise school business. The crazy offers came in...crazy! But I found myself more interested in establishing my own identity. Several years later, my company would partner with several additional schools, which I saved from financial disaster, built successful, and sold at a nice profit.
The Crawford Agency, the business that I own with my sister and several junior partners is now 12 years old. Our most visual is our talent management group. Yes, management. We manage actors, models, and singers. With offices in the United States (Miami, New York, and LA), England, India, Dubai, and China. We represent a few stars (January Jones from Mad Men, Disney kid Davis Cleveland, ESPN football analyst Mark Schlereth, and others) and a whole lot of other talent. We also have Public Relations offices (which is how we started) with offices in Houston, Chicago, and Minneapolis. Plus...we also have Advertising Agencies located in Denver, Chicago, and Minneapolis. It is my kingdom, and I love all of the creative energy it brings to me.
