David's Story

In 1972 I met a girl who worked as a medical transcriptionist. I didn't even know what that was. The more I learned about her work the more interested I became. By 1974 I had started a medical transcription company. In 1999 I sold the company and retired. Sometimes life just happens. What are the odds I could've planned that life? My wife, Bobbie, (not the girl I met in '72) and I had often talked of traveling. Now we had the time and spent 2000 doing just that. When we finally tired of traveling we started thinking of where we wanted to live. We agreed on Florida. One night in 2001 I was watching the golf channel and saw an AD for The Villages, a retirement community in central Florida. Their AD presented all the standard amenities, with one different and exciting option - buyers are able to participate in the home design. However, their biggest hook, for me at least, was "play golf free for the rest of your life." While that might not get everyone's attention (including Bobbie's), I'm a golfer with lots of free time. They have a stay-and-play plan (my words) for prospective buyers. After taking advantage twice I was sold. Unfortunately, it's located some distance from polite society, sixty miles from the closest city, Orlando, and Bobbie was simply not interested. However, in an effort to change her mind, over the following few months I displayed my best behavior, and used my most convincing logic. In the end, I prevailed, with the proviso that if after one year she was not happy, we would move. Finally, near the end of 2002 we signed ...Expand for more
a construction contract. Three months later (they're fast) we moved in. When I first wrote this in 2006, I stated that I couldn't get Bobbie to move from here now if I wanted to. Well, it's now 2012 and we're still here. Looks like I'm stuck. :-) I always thought retirement would be boring. I was sure wrong. Or, maybe it's just this place. There are so many things to do that one must plan activities carefully. Over the last ten years there have been a lot of changes here in The Villages. Most of them good. The number of houses has doubled. Shopping has quadrupled. Restaruants have taken over. And, there are now over forty golf courses on the property and adding more every year. There is one change, however, that was not well received by most of us. If you look at my pictures you will see one of Bobbie standing by a single buffalo that she had just finished feeding. It was one of a fairly large herd of buffalo owned by the developer and kept on the property. We, as I'm sure most people, had never been around live buffalo. We often joined the crowds watching and feeding them - they would eat right out of your hand. One day the buffalo disappeared. The story is that there was an insurance issue, but no one really knows. We really miss them. I would guess that if you're reading this you thought you recognized my name as a person from your distance past. If so, you're probably as old as I am. If that's true, I would hope that you too are retired and that your life is as full and rewarding as ours. If not, drop by. We'll arrange a tour.
