David's Story

Life is good. My wife, Linda, and I have been married since 1978. We met in grad school. She came from Florida and I from Kansas. I switched careers as most of us are probably doing. I finished a degree to work in city administration and found myself heading off to seminary and the study of religion. My dad was a pastor and I promised myself this was not for me. However, this changed and I felt draw to ministry. After pastoring I found I was drawn to helping people work emotionally deal with the crisis that often comes from a health care crisis. So, most of my working life I have been director of chaplaincy in a hospital. Last year (2017) I retired and now am working on reinventing myself. Linda and I live in the Waynesboro, VA in the Shenandoah Valley at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For a good number of years were were in Martinsville, Virgiinia where all of our children went to high school. Martinsville is on the Winston Cup NASCAR race circuit and perhaps the smallest city with a track that holds over 80,000 fans. You want to be out of town two times a year unless you have tickets. We could see the Blue Ridge mountains from the hospital in which I worked. We spent time in a small cabin in the mountains near the Blue Ridge Parkway when we need to get away and are fixing it up for family gatherings. In 2007 & 8 we spent a year and a half studying Islam in Qom, Iran. This was an exchange program between the Mennonites service organization...Expand for more
brokered by the Red Crescent Society. I have three children in their 30's. They all are really fun to hang out with. My oldest, Abigail is married and is stationed in Korea as a captain in the Air Force. Her husband is up for major this year in Tacoma. Our two sons are in Virginia. Andrew our youngest is studying at George Mason U health care administration. Oh, he looks so much like Dale Jr. that he is asked for his picture regularly. We think its funny but he thinks it is a burden to bear. However, it gets him a lot of distance in the south. Josh, lives in Waynesboro with us and is between things. I keep up with sports. I work out at the gym now that i cannot jog. I am even trying yoga to see if I can get back flexibility. Travel and exploration of new cultures led me to work on my doctorate. My specialization is in pastoral care. I am in negotiations to teach a term in Kenya having just finished my doctorate in Austin, TX. I have to many things I still want to explore and places to go. The best part of life is having a good time with friends. The older I get the more I value old friendships. Hearing peoples stories are the spice of life. We have connected with cousins in Europe and have exchanged visits. One thing that is important is to begin to build back the old connections with classmates. So, this web site is something I plan on using regularly. Let me know how you are doing and what you are up to over the last years. David
