David's Story
Life
Here follows a brief synopsis of my life since I started high school:
After spending my first two years of high school at Clovis High in Clovis, CA, I moved to Honolulu, HI in the Summer of 1973. In 1975, I graduated from McKinley High School in Honolulu, HI. A month after graduation, I reported to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO for Basic Cadet Training. That lasted until I got fed up with extremely high jerk quotient there, and also found out that a degree in Astronautical Engineering was more likely to get me a seat in a missile silo in North Dakota than a seat in the cockpit of a space shuttle. I withdrew from the Academy a few weeks after arriving and moved back to Fresno, CA, which is where I lived prior to moving to HI.
After another very unsatisfactory experience with the military (California Air National Guard), I went back to school and got my BA in Biology from Fresno State. I then went East for graduate school. I worked on recognition of DNA sequences by proteins in the lab of Professor Paul Modrich at Duke University. I got my Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Genetics from Duke in 1990. I spent the next 2 years doing postdoctoral research at MIT and UNC.
In 1993 I went to work as a research scientist at the Becton Dickinson Research Center in North Carolina, where I spent almost nine years developing methods for DNA-based diagnosis of infectious disease. I then moved to Mad...Expand for more
ison, WI and worked for 4 years doing research on new methods for protein detection. I am now working for Invitrogen's Molecular Probes subsidiary in Eugene, OR, where I do research on cutting edge technologies for scientific imaging and detection systems.
I got married in December of 1989, and my son was born 11 months later. He's a high school Senior now, and recently turned 17. Unfortunately, the woman I married had a lot of problems that I could not solve. Even more unfortunately, she thought that heavy drinking and anti-depressants could solve them, but all they did was make things worse. After 12 years of marriage, I couldn't tolerate the situation anymore, so I left North Carolina, started a new job in Wisconsin, and filed for divorce. After a bitter custody battle, I ended up with custody of my son during the school year. I now have him year-round. So, she got the house, I got the kid. All in all, I think I got the better deal.
My son and I moved to Eugene, OR in July, 2006, and we're still not entirely used to being Oregonians. I'm looking forward to skiing on Mt. Hood one of these days. It will be my first time skiing on a volcano.
I spend most of my spare time doing graphics, 3D modeling, animation, and scripting for an online roleplaying game that I have been hosting for over 5 years. Other diversions include playing my guitar and bass, Alpine skiing, and the occasional round of golf.
