Dawn's Story

Life I currently work at Bright Ideas Promotional Products. I track all of our clients orders, do shipping and data entry. I started here as a temp here in mid July, and got hired permanently in October. Prior to this I spent the last two years working temp positions and being unemployed which was a bummer. I spent twenty years working in the optical business making prescription eyewear. I started working for my Dad at Sears Optical in 1984. (Two years after graduation.) I was there until February 1998, when Sears discontinued our contract-we were a concession and my dad was the owner. Sears replaced us with the company that owns the opticals in Sears stores nationwide. We moved on to our own little store near Souper Salad at Wyoming and Menaul. That lasted five years, but by the end of that time we just could not stay open. We just could no longer compete with the chains. After that I spent a year and a half working at Muller Optical. Unfortunately, I was laid off at the end of November. Outside of working, I have been active in Albuquerque Science Fiction Fandom for the last 16 years. I have been on the planning committee for Bubonicon-the local SF/Fantasy convention for 9 of the last 12 years. I have also traveled to other regional SF/F conventions. Such as Mile Hi Con in Denver, which is one of my favorites to go to. I also went to the Worldcon (the World SF Convention, held annually-this year 2007 in Yokohama, Japan-but I am not going. Way too expensive!) in San Antonio, Texas in 1997. I do intend to start attending future Worldcons. Maybe starting next year in Denver. But first I need to start to save money for such trips. I also would like to travel to other places world wide. Epecially to Great Britain and New Zealand!!! I also like to go to Highland Games, Celtic Festivals and Renaissance Faires. I got to...Expand for more
go to the Colorado Ren Faire a couple of years ago and loved it. The fun thing about SF/F Cons and Ren Faires is getting to dress in costume.(The now picture I have shown is from a Bubonicon 35 photo shoot (2003). B'con has a theme day on the Saturday of the con and that year's theme was Space Pirates - I just opted for a traditional pirate wench. The sword belongs to my good friend Kathy Kelley-Kubica.) I also like to collect costumes, and the appropriate accessories to go with them. I have found most of my costumes on EBAY, because there are several sellers who will make them to measure. To this day, Halloween is STILL my favorite holiday!! I have been a ocean liner addict since I was 10 and my family went to S. California on vacation and we went to the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Definitely a defining moment in my life. I collect ocean liner memorabilia- mostly the Queen Mary and the Titanic. I first really learned about the Titanic in seventh grade when I first read 'A Night To Remember'. I am a big fan of music of many types. 80's hard rock/heavy metal-Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Rush and Def Leppard are some of my favorite bands. I am kind of partial to British bands. I also love Status Quo and Magnum- both of whom never broke big in America.I also love Celtic (Including Scottish and Irish folk music. Including bagpipes!) and Renaissance Faire music. As far as Ren Faire music goes, one of my favorite bands is Blackmore's Night. Ritchie Blackmore formerly of Deep Purple (Smoke On The Water) is the guitarist. A bit of a change for him. I am still single, and I never had any children. I am enjoying my singleness, but I would like to eventually find the right man and get married. I don't want to have any children this late in my life. I don't want to be past 60 when they would graduate from high school!
