Dawn's Story

Life My life bio? Ok, hello, how is everyone? I have no clue how 20 years has passed so quickly. Not too much to write. Well, actually, if I wrote it all I guess it would take a while. (I think of our English teachers every time I write anything - I still write way too much than I need to!) I could tell you how at 22 I went from working for Ralph Lauren to working on a dairy farm, milking cows & taking care of 200 babies while waiting for a deejay position to open up..but I'll stick to the major stories! I've moved around a bit. Ok, understatement - I've lived in AL (for school), FL (my parents moved there after graduation), IN (nanny position while in college), NY (twice), TN (two cities), NC (two cities) & CA. I currently live in New York, where I've been the last five years & where I just opened an alpaca clothing & gift store. I spent many years as a country music deejay, until around 2000 when most stations started carrying satellite feeds from CA (which unless you know better, sounds local). After that, I moved to CA & worked for the Monterey Bay Aquarium (in Development) & then at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (Marine Operations along with a temporary postion as assistant to the President). I loved it, it was beyond amaziing, but missed my family & friends on the East Coast. My parents had moved to New York, so I came here - & almost promptly left two days later when we were hit with a huge ice storm. Once the ice melted (two weeks later - we lived on Lake Ontario), I realized what a great city I moved to (Rochester) & have stayed on even though my parents & most of my family are all back in NC now. In addition to the store, I run an organization called The City Walk, which keeps me busy outside of work. Over the years, I've also spent alot of time volunteering for a number of great organizations. Rochester is one of the country's leading cities for philantrophy so there's plenty of opportunities to stay busy. Rochester is like a small NYC - it's amazing in so many ways - especially the arts - without the traffic & other issues you find in bigger cities. We call it a "small town" because it seems everyone knows everyone else in some way. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out how friendly a town it is - while it's not quite the same as "southern hospitality" (I've had many people comment on how "nice" I am, when I'm just doing something I consider normal), it's definately squashes the image of the brash New Yorker. Not married, no kids (though I spent many years as a nanny & have friends that call me for kid advice) - I'm told I stay too busy. I did recently acquire (by default) two cats...& did have that scare of turning into the cat lady (no kids, just 50 cats). lol. Seriously, hopefully soon things will change & I'll settle down on some alpaca farm..but close to a big city...somewhere. (While my friends up north want me to stay, I do miss the south. And while the schools up here are wonderful, I really do think when the time comes, I want to raise my kids in the south. Time will tell!) Other fun facts: I started a majorette squad at the local high school when I lived in NC and was the coach for two years. I even took them to UT for majorette camp, the same one I went to every year while I was at LHS. I still act. I have done a bit of community theater, and while I haven't had time for acting lately, I do volunteer at one of our local theaters when I can. I'm even thinking of auditioning for one of our local cabarets (I learned all the lines to a number of their long-running shows while dating one of the actors - ha!) I'm also hoping we have a reunion. If no one has anything in the works yet, I'm open to organizing one (with the help of some of you other fine folk). A few of us had talked about organizing a 15th and then we all got busy. I'm willing to make the time for our 20th. While there's a few people I still keep in touch with, I'd love to catch up with everyone! Workplace See life bio. I went to school for broadcasting, planning to become the next Joan Lunden. Instead, I got a wonderful o...Expand for more
n-air position in radio my second year of college, working on the morning show for the #1 station in the area. (A very clean show, but we did crazy things like hypnotized and froze a dj in ice for three days, had a baby elephant in the parking lot when the circus came to town, had a dj camp out on a billboard to raise money for a local charity...just alot of fun) I spent a number of years working for a few different stations until 2000, when the industry changed & I left for good. (I do miss it from time to time.) Since then, I've been trying to find "the right job". I've tried quite a few things, & am finally getting close to what I really want to do. Unfortunately, you still have to pay the bills in the meantime so... Truthfully, I've worked way too many jobs to list. Definately a jack-of-all-trades, which has actually been a good thing. I can jump in and do pretty much anything, which has benefitted my many employers. About the only things I haven't done are fast food (which I'll never do, though I have been a hostess at both a destination restaurant and a yacht club) and anything involving cars - though I have been to 4-H Tractor School! It's mainly been b/c I've either needed a second job (radio postions do not pay well unless you are Howard Stern) or I've moved b/c of a reason other than work (my first move to New York was to be close to my grandpa while he battled cancer). I've worked almost all of the major retailers (Macy's, Wal-mart, Victoria's Secret, Borders, etc), and have held positions in accounting firms, large and private law firms, a mortgage firm, assistant to financial advisors, managed a Nutri-System...I also worked for Kelly Services & Manpower over the years & worked on everything from construction sites to colleges. It is kind of a joke among my good friends - they take bets on how long I stay at a job, but seriously, I wouldn't trade it for anything...I've met so many amazing people and done so many amazing things (spent an afternoon at work in a wet suit in the big indoor tank at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute taking an "at sea rescue class", stayed stylish and smart with amazing discounts on clothes and books, realized I could easily be an accountant or lawyer if I wanted, met so many musical artists, spent long days on the farm driving tractors and taking care of cows - and am now learning about alpacas, watched amazing sailing from a beautiful yacht, been to a variety of wonderful conferences, eaten great food, drank good wine - all in the name of work...) I'm sure it sounds crazy to anyone that has been with the same company (or atleast same line of work) since graduation. Tongue-firmly-in-cheek, I chalk it up to the actress in me. It's both good training and length of attention-span. If not challenged or able to use my creativity, I get bored. I'm also more of an entrepreneur, & have a hard time with the eight-to-five, one hour lunch break schedule. (I tried really hard to fit in, but it just didn't feel right. I was always asking for more work to do because I'd get bored with my assigned tasks.) I work from sun-up to sun-down (I'm a definate night owl) & always give way more than requested, but have always had a hard time being stuck to someone else's schedule. I now have my own store & am very excited to finally have an outlet for all my skills and interests! We sell clothing & gifts for men, women, children & the home - all made from alpaca. (Aren't familar with it? You will be. It's becoming more mainstream.) I am seriously looking at having a farm down the road & had looked into alpacas. I met a few people in the industry & long story short, now have a store! My most recent perk? We're going to Vegas at the end of the month for what is called the alpaca industry's equivalent to Fashion Week! I can't wait! No boredom here! Military No military service, but I did live at Fort Ord in Monterey, California for two years. My roommate was in the Army and going through training at the Defense Language Institute. Thank you to all of you that have served or are currently serving our country.
