Dawn's Story
Life
Okay, so maybe I was a nerd in high school, but I grew up and learned that I am a nerd in real life! If you didn't laugh at that, you need to loosen up! I went to college at Colorado State University and got an undergrad in Psychology. I am currently planning on going back to school to get a doctorate in Nursing or in Forensic Science. I want to work at Children's Hospital in either the ER or in the Kidney/Cancer units. I am currently a Host Home Provider for a disabled teenager. That is like a foster parent. High School is a lot harder the second time than it was the first time around ;-) I still live in Longmont, but hope to buy a peice of property in the mountains to build a home on. I am involved in a non-denominational Christian church and have worked with severly abused children in the past. I am still single and enjoying it. I love the fact that my time is MY time and that I can go where I want and with whom I want, when ever I want! I laugh a lot and truely enjoy everything in my life!
College
College was a trip for me! It was rough my first year or so in that I was still a shy girl and a little overwhelmed with college life. It wasn't until I was late into my Sophmore year that I really found out who I am! I was in all sorts of club sports from Ultimate Frisbee to Volleyball and Softball. I became a RA, a tough job, but it helped cut school costs! I took as many science/medical classes as possible and played as hard as I possibly could without failing! I spent free time at the $2.00 theater, in the mountains, with my church group and playing practicle jokes. I studied in coffe shops, the dorms were too loud ;-)
My most embarassing memory was when I was studing for finals my junior year. We were at Perkins, because it was the only place that stayed open 24 hours and served cheap food. Our service was awful and it took almost 2 hours just to get a drink, so we went to the store to get snacks. We picked up a can of honey roasted peanuts and other items and took th...Expand for more
em back to Perkins. I hand the peanuts on my lap, so the staff of Perkins wouldn't see, when my great friend John asked for some. I hand him the can. He says, "I thought you would just hand me a hand full!" I replied, "I didn't think you wanted my hands all over your nuts!" Of course it was loud enough that our entire study group of about 15 and others in the resturant heard it! All started to crack up. I didn't realize what I had said until later, then bright red, I slid under the table and tried to bury my head in the sand!!! I was left to being teased about that moment for the rest of my college career! It still haunts me now and then when I am in contact with my college friends.
I loved school, all that I learned about the world around me, myself and about others. It is where I have been the most happy and have had the most experiences, both good and bad. I am tankful for the opportunity and will cherish all the memories, even the embarrasing ones!
Workplace
My first "real" job was as a supervisor for a home in Fort Collins. We were a place that worked with Social Services. We supervised high risk visits between children and parents/loved ones. We would document the visits and report our findings to the courts. Needless to say, we got to know the police VERY well! I also worked as a school bus driver at the same time. I wasn't the old stinky one that usually drove. Actually, I was the youngest by many years!
When I moved back to Longmont, I got a job driving a bus for a company that was a day program for disabilities. From there, I became a Host Home Provider with one of the companies I woked with. This is like being a foster parent. It was really awful pay, so I have recently turned in my resignation. I am going to help develop and run a day program/ outing program for people with disabilities. This will start at the beggining of the year. This will also allow me to go back to school, because a lot of the work I will be doing with be in the late afternoon and on weekends.
