Dawna's Story
It's a long way from Don Mills to Mount Dandenong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA! I have lived here for forty years now. I am a full time practicing artist finally after teaching at colleges and university here in Australia. I was sent over to Saudi Arabia in 2007-8 to assist in the establishment of the Diploma of Visual Arts at the newly opened Arts and Skills Institute for women in Riyadh, i always knew i would be an artist and teacher, though at school I was not very successful. It took until I came to Australia and achieved a degree in Fine Arts, majoring in ceramics, graduating with high distinction. I have been married for the past forty years to an Aussie fellow and we have two (now adult) children. I still miss Canada-specially at Christmas (it is hot here and I miss the snow) but this is home and I love it!

y memories of growing up in Don Mills and of Rippleton Road Public School. I specially remember; Robert Parkin, Barbara Hallsworth, Lynne Jarvis and Sharron Donaldson, who were classmates and friends.I visited the school in 2016 and saw the place where my old house had been on Larkfield Drive- they had demolished it to build a horrid Mcmansion! To buy in that area now would cost over a million, and a lot of the original houses that were built have been demolished to build larger homes sadly. I guess time marches on for all of us. Now I live in the hills about a one hour drive from Melbourne, with towering eucalypts in my backyard, Kookaburras wake us each morning and we feed the cockatoos, rosellas, lorikeets and king parrots every day. Life has turned out unexpected but peaceful and conducive to creativity. I have arrived!
