Dean's Story

Life Goodness, I have not really been back to Aiken since I left in 1977 except to visit every now and again. Most folks have moved on and the town had really changed since the last time I was there for my Dad's funeral in June of 2001. Let's see, I currently reside overseas in Afghanistan. I work in the field of aviation and have done so most of my adult life. I love to travel and I"ve not found any real place that I"ve been to that I couldn't in some way call home. I guess that is the gypsy blood in me. I"ve been married twice and I have 4 kids in total. I don't have any bills to speak of except for a house I share with a bank in florida. I like to trade commodities, I'm especially interested in the cattle market as well as grains and I dabble with 5 year notes. I love to travel on the international scene where my ultimate goal is to start in Moscow and go around the world and return with out using any airplanes. I love to ride my Harley Dyna Glide as well. I'm a fan of Rock and Roll both old and new. I love to go to concerts both indoors as well as outdoors. The most recent thing I went to was the Rolling Stones at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas in October of 2006. I"m also an amature guitar player and I love the 100 watt Marshall stack and Les Paul combo. I'm a '24' addict and I enjoy Boston Legal in addition to Ed. TV is best appreciated with a 64in Plasma screen interfaced to a Bose wireless surround sound system. Anything else you want to know, feel free to ask. Military It took me 21 years to get my 4 year degree. Those of you with 4 year degrees or more, know what I mean. During that time I enlisted at 18 and went to Armor School at Fort Knox, Ky. I was assigned from 1977 to 1979 to L Troop 3/2 Armored Cav Regiment, which at the time was in Amberg, Germany. From there I went to the 1/9 Cav at Fort Hood, Tx, from 1979 to 1980, where I met wife #1. A friend talked me into going to Intel School at Fort Huachuca, Az so I was there f...Expand for more
or a few months in 1980. After Intel School, I was assigned to 2/17 Air Cav at Fort Campbell, Ky as an Intel Analyst. During that period of time, I decided to tackle flight school and in July of 1982 I went to Fort Rucker, Alabama and graduated as a brand new Warrant Officer in June of 1983. I went from there to Hanau, Germany from 1983 to 1987 and was assigned originally to A Company, 503rd Aviation Battalion of the 3 Armored Division which later morphed into the 189th General Support Aviation Company. Our call sign was the Ghostriders. Some where around the 1984/85 time frame, I divorced wife #1. Thanks to the Graham/Rudman bill I was one of 2500 folks 'unofficially' RIF'd in 1987. I went from there back to Fort Rucker where I worked for the Civilian Contractor teaching Initial Entry Rotary Wing fledglings in the different phases of flight school from the Primary Phase to Basic Combat Skills to Night Vision Goggle Systems. I was there from 1987 until 2005 during which time I met and divorced wife #2 and got my Associates, Bachelors and Law Degree. During this period, at various times, I was in A Company 1/131st Aviation Battalion in the Alabama Army National Guard. I most recently Began work with a Private Contractor in Afghanistan from January of 2006 until the present time. That at times can be rather exciting. Well the intro to this secton said I'm supposed to discuss "From boot camp to tropical tours of duty to long hours spent waiting for action, your military service helps make you who you are." All I have to say about that is this. The 2 way range is not all that it is cracked up to be and when the first bullet snaps past your head, your whole perspective on life changes completely. I will say that nothing on earth is more exhilarating than participating in, and successfully executing a finely tuned, choreographed, and rehearsed, assault onto an objective maximizing the use of ground coordinated forces in conjuction with available air assets.
