Dean's Story
My first 11 years of my life, I lived in Chatsworth, California, where I attended Superior Street School. I moved to Phoenix in 1971 and graduated from Shea Middle School.
After graduating from Paradise Valley High School in 1977, I attended Scottsdale Community College. I received an Associate of Arts degree in 1980, then attended Grand Canyon College, majoring in Music Education. After a couple of years at Grand Canyon College, I dropped out.
I then got married, and had three children: Maggie (1983), Ephraim (1988), and Petra (1993). We lived in north Phoenix. I began working as a civil draftsman, a skill I learned at PVHS. I had a successful and enjoyable career working in civil engineering. I advanced to designer, then engineer. I returned to Grand Canyon University and graduated in December 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. My marriage with my children's mother did not last, and we were divorced.
In 1999, I married Twyla. Twyla and I have had a happy marriage and an enjoyable life together. We live in north Phoenix, my home area since 1971. Twyla is an excellent social studies teacher, specializing in Advanced Placement U.S. History at Chaparral High School. Having a teacher for a wife gave me renewed interest in teaching an...Expand for more
d I obtained a second teaching certificate in Industrial Technology. I began substitute teaching as well as teaching drafting for one year at PVHS. My career in civil engineering ended in 2006 when I began teaching full-time at a charter school. I taught high school students in virtually all areas, specializing in mathematics. I enjoyed this. This job came to an end in August 2010 when the school was down-sized and I was laid-off. Currently, I am substitute teaching, and searching for another teaching position.
I have played trombone and euphonium since the late 1970's. I have played professionally, mainly in musical theater. In the early 2000's, I began concentrating on flute. Twyla also sings and plays French horn. Occasionally, Twyla and I sing together at her school, or at church.
I enjoy paddling kayaks and canoes. I own both, but find myself more often in my kayak than in my canoe. I am also a Confederate reenactor, and enjoy "shooting" the Yankees. Twyla and I also do real shooting with modern, as well as historical weapons. I still have my lifelong passion for trains. I have a small, but complex model railroad at home, and Twyla and I sometimes travel across the country on Amtrak. Twyla grew up in Georgia, and we both love to visit the South.
