Dean's Story
I joined the Army two weeks after high school and spent four years on active duty as a military police officer. While in the Army I also became a certified commercial salvage diver. I then spent another four years in the Massachusetts National Guard as a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Weapons Specialist. During that time I returned to my pre-military trade and worked as a bricklayer and a cement finisher for several years but eventually decided to take a different path. I began working at Seabrook Nuclear Power Station as a Radiological Waste Handler. I attended Northern Essex Community College and Salem State College at night working toward a degree in biology. After college I went to work for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management as a forest firefighter. After 9-11, I chose to dust-off my military training and went to work for the newly formed Department of Homeland Security and in 2004, after several years of looking for explosive residue I felt the need to return to my love of environmental work. So in 2005 I became an Environmental Technician for the State of New Hampshire's Department of Environmental Services (DES.) drinking water systems operator and tracked water contamination in over 3000 public drinking water systems. Then in August of 2007 I joined DES' Commissioner's Office as the Household Hazardous Waste Program Coordinator. I help fund household hazardous waste collections through legislative grants, help with recycling programs, and conduct education and outreach events to public and private groups throughout the state. I am now working toward my second degree in Environmental Management. My most recent project involves educating the public about mercury containing compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and the recycling options that exist in New Hampshire. I am also helping to set up a state-wide expired pharmaceutical collection program. I co-chair the NH DES Green Team and I am also president of the DES outing club. I live in New Hampshire with my family and spend my free time SCUBA diving, kayaking, hiking & snowshoeing around the White Mountains and enjoying the great New Hampshire outdoors. I love it here.
