Deanne's Story

Life Hello: After years of solicitations from this group, I decided to join and see if anyone I know is still out there and if so, what they've done with the last 50 or so years. As for me, after following a highly mobile spouse (Ken Byerly) around the country for twenty five years, we found ourselves in Baltimore (1984), where we raised the last of our four children. In between stops, I managed to complete college and graduate school (probably wouldn't have done the doctorate had I not been offered a full fellowship). I have been a teacher (middle school through graduate school), editor of the Kalamazoo Magazine, and finally, in Baltimore, found myself helping some of the least likely students in the world go to college and stay in college to graduate. The effort needed professionally left me with little time for any other form of living. (If you’ve ever seen the HBO show, The Wire, you’ve not only seen some of my students as actors, but seen the lives of some depicted in the story line. The show, while dramatizing certain events, manages to be somewhat accurate.) Shortly before my 69th birthday (February 28th), with far too many commitments, I burned out and didn't know it until I had time to think, plan, and direct , my energy toward living my life as opposed to helping others live theirs. Actually, I think what happened to me is what happens to most "work-a-holics", especially obsessive-compulsive ones---I ran out of hours in the day before I ran out of things to do. With contracts complete I began re-directing my energy with th...Expand for more
e aim of bringing some balance back to my life. I do enjoy teaching, editing, writing, but now share professional activities with friends and family. I’ve also been working on what I like to think of as a "retreat center." If I really get motivated, I will post photos. My family have been asking me to do this very thing. (Immediate family members have spread to Minneapolis and Chicago and while we see each other regularly, none but those in the Baltimore area have seen the retreat center which is still a work in progress - two of the three floors are complete as well as the deck and part of the yard). I remain in Baltimore, where two of my sons and two of my grandchildren now live. Ken Byerly lives in Minneapolis near our only daughter Karen and her family. (Ken and I remain friends and enjoy getting together.) I have wanted to become a "bee keeper" for some time and this winter a friend of mine and I are going to do that very thing. She lives on far more acreage than I, so we will keep our bees at her farm, hopeful that our bees immune systems can remain relatively free of pollutants that have contributed to a virus that seems to be affecting bees, worldwide. (Though it is hard to ensure the safety of bees since they have a six mile flight radius. But that's another story.) I hope all is going well in your life and that some part of it is rewarding and your efforts rewarded. Most of all, I hope you find some time free from the troublesome annoyances of everyday living. I would love to hear from you. DeAnne Buckendorff Byerly
