Deanne's Story
May 2014.. think my traveling days are coming to an end. Building a little house in Hot Springs, MT.... designed it myself after tearing down the existing house. HS is tiny, about 600 people and an hour and a half from most anywhere. Main street is about 2 1/2 blocks long and you might see all manner of vehicles parked there, cars, pickups, golf carts, ATV's, bicycles, and the occasional horse. The hot springs are believed to be quite healing... some folks say "limp in, leap out." I don't know about that, but I do enjoy them. Quite a lot of alternative healing resources here for such a small place. Deer roam freely all though town and have no hesitation climbing up on people's porches to eat their flowers. Certainly a lifestyle I've never experienced before.
November 2013... Just celebrated my 70th birthday.... could not have imagined in high school that I would ever be 70, but here I am. Mostly these days I am volunteering,; hospice, YMCA Daycare, GRuB (wonderful program that includes organic gardens, CSA, Kitchen Garden Project and a high school...I love GRuB !) and the Senior Center. I'm having my second winter in Washington and it feels rather good to be rooted in one place for a while.
Every couple of months I head over to western Montana for a change of scenery and a much slower pace. Deer lounge around in the yard, there is no place in town that can't be walked to... only two grocery stores; Camus if you want Kombucha and granola, Bucky's for beer and chips. Within the approximate 12 square blocks there are these two groceries, one bank, one tiny liquor store, a school (k-12) a library, hot springs, two small motels, a bar and grill, a hardware store, a few second hand stores that are mostly closed, the town hall, two Senior Centers, one tribal and the other for everyone else, a auto repair shop, the post office, a couple of cafe's and approximately 300 souls..... that's about it ! You can get a lattle', but can't sit down to drink it. The next little town over (17 miles over) is Wild Horse Plains... love that name. And if you want Costco, supermarkets, etc... you'll drive over an hour to get to them.
Dec 2011 It was so great to see so many folks at the 50th reunion in August and sad to see the faces of those who have left us. At Christmas in Napa, CA. all my daughters, their husbands, one grandchild and myself celebrated together, the first time in many years. Mainly I live at Olympia, but currently I'm living at Topanga, CA; rekindling some old friendships from the 60's..as well as enjoying the weather... breezy at Malibu, mild at Topanga and hot in the valley. It's a good place to be for the winter. However, a couple of weeks ago I spent some time at Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, CA. Not so warm there at 5:30 am walking up the hill to morning meditation, but raking leaves for a couple of hours after breakfast warms one up. Although Topanga is quiet, the silence at Deer Park is bliss.
Nov 2010 Had the pleasure last month to go to fellow classmates 50th wedding anniversary celebration at Bellingham. A bit of a prelude to our 50th HS reunion coming up.
March 24, 2010: Arrived home yesterday from a 6 month 3 day road trip; 23,500 miles, 4 time zones, 7 oil changes, one set of tires. ,,. Heading home I hit Flagstaff, AZ and saw the first highway sign that stirred my heart: .... Los Angeles, I-40. And Los Angeles was where I was headed, or more precisely, Topanga Canyon which looks out over LA and was a place where I played in my younger years, here now to visit old friends. Next to Las Vegas, NV to see BLU...Expand for more
E MAN GROUP, And between Vegas and LA I actually did go to Zion for a few days. It snowed while I was there and the Red cliffs, the evergreens and the white show made a beautiful scene. It looked like someone had sprinkled powdered sugar over the entire area. Incredibly beautiful and awe inspiring. Then on to Lake Tahoe and Napa, CA to visit family and do fun things there. At Sonoma we went to the Di Rosa reserve, one of the most unique and enjoyable collections of contemporary art I've had the pleasure of seeing; galleries, gardens, house. Whimsical, unique. serious. sarcastic...they have the goods The other day, coming up out of Williams, CA making that turn on to I-5, I felt like I was already home, Kicked up the rock and roll a notch and settled in for the first long, straight stretch homeward.
Dec'09
Continuing on from MN I headed to New England and then on to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia for some great Celtic music. If that music doesn't get you up on your feet to dance, you might be dead.
The island, especially up out of Sydney, is populated mostly by Acadians (French) and Celts (Scots and Irish) People still speak Gaelic and French, but everyone speaks English as a second language. Great seafood and the Canadians get French Fries right. The music wonderful beyond words.
The New England coast was the next long stop and people do dress in LL Bean and say "Yaup" It's beautiful.
I'm now in the Appalachian Mountains very near Penland School of Arts and Crafts at Spruce Pine, NC. This area must have more glass artists and potters per capita than anywhere else in the world. It also has its' share of steep, narrow, winding, scary roads. The Appalachians aren't peaked and snowy like the Cascades or Olympics, they're more broad and rounded, with lots of hollers and coves. But make no mistake, they have steep. Seeing so many homes perched on the mountain sides I'm really amazed. Flat land, any little bit of flat land is prime real estate here.
Sept/Oct'09 I started out headed to Zion National Park but took a major detour to Fergus Falls, MN to help some friends harvest their big garden. It started snowing October 10th. My friends tease that I'll have to stay until spring and the thaw... but I'm not buying it. However, for the meantime I'm content to sit next to the woodstove with a cup of tea, a good book and good friends.
Apr 09... Last month I enjoyed seeing my granddaughter play rugby at the Ferndale Polo field, a great day made even better by the company of two BHS friends, Sammy and Roberta. Day after tomorrow sees me doing the east/west shuttle again.
2008 ...Since retiring in 2004 there has been more time for travel. The first week of retirement I threw some camp gear in the back of my old Volvo and drove 14,000 miles around the USA and Canada. Since then I've been able to travel Europe, Asia, Latin America and more of the USA and Canada by foot, bus, train, motorcycle, car and even old Russian aircraft.
In the spring of 2007 I took a road trip east to see my newest granddaughter and have been shuttling between Pennsylvania and Washington since. When there I live in an apartment in a 160 year old house in a colonial village. I've gotten used to driving behind Amish horse and buggy's and am tickled when the little ones wave and giggle from the open back as I follow along.
Late summer of 2008 I spent a wonderful month at Blue Cliff Monastery in New York (no phone, no TV, no computer, no newspapers).
Some classmates have left notes or sent e-mails and it's been great to hear what you're doing.
