Debbie's Story

Next year, 2022, will be our 50th year reunion of celebrating one of our early accomplishments in life: graduating from high school! I hope to see many of you there as I intend to attend (God willing)?! I still live in Texas & likely will remain here for the remainder of my time here on this planet called Earth! I became a grandmother (Nana) for the 1st time in February 2020 to Julian Jose Acosta, known as JJ. He’s named after my late husband/best friend, Jose/Joe Ibarra who passed away after a long illness in May 2019. It’s been The Hardest Road I’ve traveled since then, but I remind myself daily to live, stay patient & trust my journey. In case you didn’t know me well.. I’ve always had a philosophical side to my persona & have given it almost full reign... at this point.. why not?! Lol My 3 children are grown... well.. my youngest, my only son, is still working on completing his internship in life...lol My oldest daughter, Vanessa, is a systems engineer and lives in Huntsville, Ala. She’s getting married later this year for the first time at 40. My middle daughter, Alyssa, is a social worker (like me). She’s the only one currently married & is the mom to JJ. She currently works at a university (UTSA) as a Disabilities Specialist. I retired at the end of 2018 to take care of my husband who passed a few months later. We had been together since ~1974 & had met at Murray State U. Now I’m trying to figure out my life going forward.....I have lots of things to get done & to explore as I’m an adventurer at heart! I hope to travel as much as possible in the US and beyond! I’ve already been blessed to visit Europe 4x in my life, but there’s so much more to see & do! I’d love to hike part of the Appalachian Trail & The Camino de Santiago in Spain, Portugal & France. I got on a bicycle last year for the first time in over 30 years. I plan to do volunteer work, craftwork & perhaps write a short biography for my descendants as I have one from my great-grandmother which was awesome to read! I’ve got purging to do of my life...Expand for more
’s accumulation of things so as not to leave such a mess for my kids once I’m gone. I’m currently remodeling my home which is the only one I’ve ever owned & it’s been challenging while living in it, but the results are amazing! I’m pretty healthy to my knowledge as I’ve had regular physicals all my adult life & try to maintain/improve my health to have a better quality of life in my retirement. I enjoy music ( many genres), the arts, writing, friends, board games, gardening, the outdoors, traveling, wine, margaritas, mojitos, beer & gummies. I have life long friends (most living in other states or abroad) which I enjoy seeing from time to time. I hope this finds you healthy, peaceful & even though it’s so difficult during the COVID time, feeling blessed as I remind myself I am! Blessings, Deb 4/28/2021 (Previously) I moved to San Antonio, Texas in May 1976, the day I graduated from Murray State University. I have been married since 1977 to Joe Ibarra whom I met at Murray State. Our oldest child, Vanessa, graduated with a B.A. degree in math and her Masters in Teaching. She's currently working on her 2nd Master's in Applied Industrial Mathematics. Our middle daughter, Alyssa, graduated with a B.A. in psychology and currently lives in Austin. She is studying for the GRE and plans to earn her Master's Degree. Matthew has just begun college part-time. Life just seems to keep speeding up every year. For those of you that knew our Mom, Wanda Burton or Dad, Bill Burton (owners of the Pizza Place in the J-town shopping center), they spent most of the years after leaving Jtown between Lake Cumberland, Terre Haute, Indiana, New Orleans and finally San Antonio where they both passed away. He in 1999 and she in 2006, both from lung cancer. I love south Texas (Austin-San Antonio-Texas hill country, Texas music and way of life)! If any of you ever find you way down here, I sure hope you let me know as I'd love to show you what makes this part of TEXAS the BEST part! I wish all of you well....Deb
