Debbie's Story
Life
Maiden name: Debbie Hingston
My husband, John, and I are now in Moscow, Russia after 31 years of marriage. Here are a few significant events that represent who we are and where we are today:
1970Âs: We both taught school in Loveland, Colorado. John was a National Park Service ranger in the summer at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument on the western slope of Colorado so we spent summers there. John was awarded 2nd Place National (1st place Colorado and SW Region) Teacher of the Year in Environmental Education. In spite of this, he decided quit teaching and return to graduate school at CSU and got his MS in Geology.
1980Âs: John was hired by Amoco Production Company in Denver so we moved there. Our son, Josh, was born in 1981 and our daughter, Kristin was born in 1983. I quit teaching to stay home with them and loved every minute. We were very involved in camping and outdoors when the kids were little. John was one of the founders of Dinosaur Ridge National Historic site in Morrison, Colorado. He also taught himself guitar and banjo and organized a band with fellow geologists.
1990Âs: Amoco closed its exploration office in Denver and shipped us all to Houston. I taught in a private school (The Kinkaid School...Expand for more
) and most of JohnÂs band moved to Houston, too. Our 2 years there were filled with music. In 1994 we moved to Cairo, Egypt, where John worked with an Amoco-Egyptian joint venture in oil exploration. I taught at Cairo American College a K-12 American School that Josh and Kristin attended. Our kids thrived and both graduated from high school in a ceremony that took place in front of the pyramids at Giza. They both regard Cairo as Âhome since that is where they grew up.
2000Âs: We moved to London where John became an Exploration Advisor for BP (Amoco-BP merged in 1999) and worked on the ÂExploration Excellence TeamÂ. Both kids were in college so we were Âempty nesters at this point. (Josh is now attending Miami-Dade College and Kristin is at Rollins College in Winter Park Florida. She turned down an offer from CC!) I taught at another American school, TASIS England.
This July, we moved to Moscow where John is once again working on a joint venture with TNK-BP. I am teaching at yet another American school, The Anglo American School of Moscow. We live in an international expatriate community called Rosinka which is very comfortable and beautiful. We have a fire in the fireplace and snow on the ground as I write this.
