Debbie's Story
I can't believe that I'll celebrate TEN years of ministry on September 1st, 2021. The time has really gone by! I currently serve as pastor for two churches, St Stephen Lutheran Church in Syracuse and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Liverpool, New York. They are both wonderful congregations and I've never been happier. My daughters live in different states, so I don't see family very much, but I am so glad for technology. I do everything on line! Meetings, worship, banking, family visits. It's the only way we could make it through the pandemic.
Back in 2007, I was accepted as a candidate for ordained ministry, so my husband and I quit our jobs and moved to Philadelphia so that I could attend seminary for four years. This was the first time living on campus and being a full-time student for me, so was a little strange. I've loved every minute of it! Now I have a master's degree - Master of Divinity to be more specific.
In 1998, I finally made it to college, graduating in 2004 from the University of Phoenix with a Bachelors Degree in Business-Project Management. I took the on-line courses while working full time. Pitney Bowes paid for everything up to the last year after I was downsized out of the place. After settling in to a new job, I went back and finished the last few classes and graduated. Never thought that I'd do it.
In 1996 I moved from California to Connecticut with Pitney Bowes, for whom I worked a total of 23 years in California, Utah, and Connecticut. I met my current husband while working in CT. ...Expand for more
I finally found the right one! My two daughters are grown and together they've given me five beautiful grandchildren. With such a hectic life, it's difficult to find time to spend with them, but I make the time.
I've worked since I was 16, now, my time as a full-time seminary student is almost over. My work has been cracking the books and getting good grades these last few years. In a few months, my work will be serving a congregation as their pastor (God willing), but for now, I'll stick to my homework.
I served in several branches of the military from the time I was eighteen:
Marine Corps. Boot Camp at Paris Island, NC (wew!)
- Auto Mech's school, Camp LeJune, NC
- First assignment, New River Air Station (H)North Carolina
Air Force Reserves
- Joined when my first husband joined the Air Force. We were station at Hill Air Force Base, UT.
CA Air National Guard in Hayward
- first husband transferred back to CA, so I transferred to the ANG.
- I got out after serving two tours to take a promotion at PB
Currently I serve as chaplain to a verterans group, that my husband first joined. It's called the "Thialand, Laos, Cambodia Brotherhood" (TLC Brotherhood). It's comprised of verterans who served in the Vietnam War in those locations. My husband, Ed, served in Thialand. It's been a wonderful way to support him and our veterans and it's been very fulfilling for myself as they are all so welcoming and supportive of my call. I am the first woman in this organization to serve as chaplain or to be a member of the board.
