Debby's Story

I recently returned to Moscow after a severe auto accident to recuperate and to hopefully return to college in the fields of Anthropology/Archaeology/Native American Linguistics/NWPacific Arena. I am a retired para-educator in Special Education in the elementary and secondary levels. I am now single and have raised two children, a boy(25 yrs old) and a girl(21 yrs old) who is staying w/me until I can get around better. I enjoy sci-fi,golden oldie music, the outdoors, beading, arts & crafts, learning most anything I can. I enjoy helping people, cooking, dancing, socializing, gaming, long drives, making poetry, swimming, and blackberry jam. I like to laugh, hug, and to hold hands. My favorite hero is Jay C. Westergreen. For many years he secretly took poinsettas to all his friends mothers for Christmas, including my mother. It made her day. He always made sure the moms had a box of chocolate on Mother's Day, whether he could afford it or not, he'd always find a way. One winter, I believe it was 1969, it was particularly harsh, Jay took his snow shovel around to every single friends' mom and shoveled out their cars, making sure they were snow free. He made sure I would never smoke by giving me a Camel Straight and telling me to inhale deep. I darn near choked to death. Jay also taught me how to drive in gravel, snow, sand, wet pavement, mud, and hay fields. He gave me the confidence to learn some mechanics and some carpentering. Jay made sure I knew more about self-sufficiency than any one else had tried to do. He was my big brother, my confidant, my hero. When he contracted pneumonia in early 2008, he was a bit stubborn about seeing a doctor, mostly because he knew deep inside something awful was wrong. Two months later he couldnt deny it anymore, and the dr confirmed it.Lung Cancer-Stage 3. Not one complaint from Jay. He expressed some fear once in a while, on the whole he accepted his fate, was at peace with it and continued. He got better then did what he wanted. He drove all over Latah county, helping people here and there. He tried to get hold of a few old mates to say goodbye and right a few wrongs but could not find most of them. He had married long ago to a very confident and independent woman, whom I also admired. He went through all the stages of acceptance of his fate, finding further that his heart could fail him before the cancer could take him. The meds took his legs out from under him often, taking his pride, as he had to ask for help to walk, to eat as he got weaker. He tried an experimental juice and rallied almost winning the race against the cancer, when his heart failed. My best friend, teacher, valiant k...Expand for more
night, shall be sorely missed. After graduation in 73 I hung around town tending bar for a few years until 86 when I married and moved to Longview, WA, where I raised a husband and two children for almost 20 years. From there I dropped everything to pursue a college career in Everett, WA in 2007, then on to Moscow, Jan 1, 2009. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Richard Woolums because he always treated me with respect. He was an intelligent human being with a quick sense of humor that many didn't seem to appreciate. He carried the most interesting conversations. He made me think. Life really doesn't always turn out the way one expects. My biggest surprise has been learning to live with a neuromuscular disease. Getting diagnosed was the hardest part. Some drs wouldn't co-operate with research, stating it was all in my head. I currently am having problems with my primary on pain issues and other concurrent side effects from my auto accident the primary is unwilling to acknowledge. My insurance is being difficult about changing primarys. However, to be truly happy I could live just about anywhere, doing almost anything, as long as I was with the one person who would stand with me for all time, have faith in me, my goals, my dreams, and my ability to achieve them. This one person would need honesty and understanding when mistakes are made, and know that neither of us have to be perfect. Most of all this person would have to be willing to pledge his heart always for the bond between us would be unconditional. This person would have to be sober, and mostly non-smoking. My first job was at the A & W, where I got paid $1.25 phr to carhop. What I remember most about it is making rootbeer in the open vats with a kazillion flies zizzin' around and in the uncovered vats. So gross!. When I was six years old I was out joyriding in my new roadster pedal car up on eighth street near hayes, two fellas about my age were standing on the corner, eyeing me. The taller one was grinning from ear to ear. He said "hey you want a push?" Sounded good for a try so I shook my head yes and the taller practically leaped at me. The shorter one hung back. the one with the black hair, started to push me right down the road. he began to laugh gleefully. I was scared. Here we go! he yelled. I didn't see the juniper bush until he shoved real hard, stood up, and waved good by. w/big smile Then broke out laughing. Suddenly there I was, crashed. Right into a huge juniper bush.,sideways The boys' father saw all this. He made them take me out of the bush. clean me up Then we went to their home and had cookies and milk mmmmmmmmmmm
