Deborah's Story

A bit of an update: I landed a job after the tax season as a habilitation specialist working with the developmentally disabled (DD). It is an entry-level position, one that provides all-important hands-on experience with this very special community. I am overqualified in so far as my education goes (in Ohio -- not, however, by Missouri's standards), but I am underqualified in terms of direct experience (anywhere in the USA). Most career-building jobs serving the DD community require a minimum of a year of direct contact -- this is because not everyone is suited to dealing with the interpersonal needs of the DD population. My next major career goal is to become a QDDP, formerly known as a QMRP. The Q stands for Quality (of care -- and case management). ---Previously posted info follows--- Just a quick update: I have yet to locate a full-time, year-round job, but I am at least working seasonally (and full-time, thanks to my availability) as a tax preparer. This is something I have long wanted to pursue, but other obligations got in the way. Now that I have the hands-on experience, I intend to stick with this in the years to come as a means to supplement income, especially once I reach retirement age. ---Previously posted info follows--- Whew! I am still catching my breath. I am just back home in Columbus after a marvelous, if too short, trip to Portland, Oregon, and (my favorite place on this Earth) the San Francisco Bay Area. But I have to say that Portland definitely...Expand for more
struck the proverbial chord with me. Bookworm that I am (and have always been), I would seriously consider moving to Portland for no reason other than the pleasure of frequenting the plethora of Powell's bookstore locations. ---Previously posted info follows--- Graduated with honors, diploma in hand. The posted picture dates back to Thanksgiving 2007. From left to right: Bethany, me, and Katherine. These two are the fraternal twins. ---Previously posted info follows--- Yes! I got through my final exams (as of tonight) and turned in all my research papers. My GPA for the quarter is 3.93. Graduating magna cum laude is in the bag, and I will have missed summa cum laude by a tenth of a point. Next up: Take a much-needed vacation to Portland and San Francisco, then put together a resume, search for a job, cram for the LSAT and GRE, and apply to graduate and/or law school a year or so down the road. ---Previously posted info follows--- No time for a lengthy update just yet. But I do want to share the biggest news in my life right now: On Sunday, August 30, I will finally have earned the bachelor's degree I started working on in Fall of 1976. Thanks to changing schools, changing graduation requirements, and changing majors, I have accummulated enough credit hours to have earned more than one master's degree. Short take on other news: Four great children; two marriages -- one short, the other long. Recently divorced after a 25 year marriage (his choice, not mine).
