Deborah's Story
I attended Clarion State College in PA after HS graduation, and was a gymnast on their nationally ranked gymnastics team. I received my BS in special education. I married Robert Abbott a month after graduation and we located to Parkersburg, WV. This was quite a shocker when comparing it with Willingboro. However, I grew to like the wonderful people in this state; they're some of the nicest people I have ever met and the slowness of life was a refreshing change. I gave birth to 2 daughters and 1 son (Temarie Leigh, Tracey Michelle, and David Scott). I also became a certified gymnastics official. We moved to Richmond, VA in 1989, primarily due to the lack of good medical care in WV. I home-schooled my children for awhile, and returned to teaching public school in order to afford the private school tuition for my children. Both of my daughters were competitive gymnasts, with Tracey rising toward the elite level. My son earned his black belt in karate during this time. I also continued judging gymnastics, and finally earned my National rating after some serious studying. I am now able to officiate national level competitions and was associated with Mary Lou Retton (1984 Olympics) and Courtney Kupets (2004 Olympics). I received my master's degree from the College of William & Mary (Williamsburg, VA) in 2001 in Resource/Collaborative Teaching....Expand for more
I continued teaching students with special needs, but decided to enter a new realm of teaching as a teacher of gifted students. I am now retired and periodically visit my daughters and grandson (Cody) in Raleigh, NC. My son lives only 3 miles from me and I visit him very regularly. My husband I live in Suffolk, VA which is 24 miles from the resort area of VA Beach. Altogether, I have had a very blessed life.
Update: I'm returning to school where I will earn a degree in computer modeling and simulation. It appears as if I am destined to be one of those eternal students. Modeling and Simulation can be thought of as "virtual reality" which is really big in this area. When I finish the degree, I will be able to get a job for about $55,000...more than I would have made as a teacher. If I go onto receiving additional education, my pay will steeply rise to about $82,000. I am located near the very busy military center in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia (southeastern VA). The military's Joint Forces Command Center is located within walking distance of my home. This military Center invites its allies, from all over the world, to play "war games" where they engage in strategical planning for various military situations that may arise in all parts of the world. Stay tuned...I will be updating my educational progress as I go through the program.
