Deborah's Story
Life
Over dinner the other day - Russian/Georgian - a friend happened to mention one of her old high school friends and asked if I kept in contact with mine. "Of course not," I replied, surprised that anyone did. I suppose life has taken me in a different direction than most people I knew in HS - and college, for that matter. In the intervening years between finishing HS and the present moment I finished my first BA (Russian Studies), helped a friend start a business, finished my 2nd BS (Biology, Zoology emphasis), got a lucrative dotcom job (and was wealthy on paper, for a while), started a novel, started law school, started grad school, finished law school, took the Bar. Now I can see the fruits of all my efforts in the near distance...within the next year I will finish my MA (International Relations) and hopefully publish the novel... So, basically, things have been both very busy and very good. On the fuzzier side of life - my favorite side - I try...Expand for more
to juggle a fairly active social life, write, read, drink lots of healthy teas, garden, try new kinds of cuisine and shop as often as I can.
Workplace
Working for a dot com was an education in itself. I find it has prepared me nicely for law school and dealing in the "real" world. I learned what a stock option was and the evils thereof, the problems with ego surfit and intelligence scarcity (usually combined in the same individuals), the importance of buzzwords (hint: this is the key to success in law school and business school, too), that networking is key to success (law school drove this lesson home very nicely), to always have a fulfilling life project OTHER than work (started my novel at my dotcom job: best damn "dare" I ever took, to write a novel). Good things to know, although perhaps not quite what I expected when I accepted the job.
Currently, I find myself most attracted to foreign policy-oriented jobs, so I expect a major chage of pace soon
