Deborah's Story

Life Always happy to hear from Samohi grads or fellow students from other schools. I changed my name to Ashley Redford in 1991 for a stage name, but the stage never came:)! Old friends still call me by Deborah or Debbie. I currently live in Northern Cal with my two children and two cats. My time is full with homeschooling my little ones during the day, working at night and on weekends, studying for classes and volunteering, but I always find time to deepen into spiritual practice, play with my children and expand the joy in my life. Sending positive vibes out to everyone and hoping that your life is filled with mild temperatures and fabulous sunsets! School My most inspirational teacher was Mr. Bill Cloke. He was my fourth grade teacher at Franklin Elementary in Santa Monica. He went above and beyond the call of his job to be present and nurturing to my needs at that time of my life. He encouraged my mom to get me involved in music, particularly the guitar, and helped her find a guitar to purchase for me on my ninth birthday. When I was thirty two I tried to contact him by calling the school and leaving my phone number. Nothing ever happened and so I held his inspiration in my heart for another time. When I was thirty seven I entered his name into the computer and there he was! I so longed to share my appreciation with him for close to twenty years and here was my chance. Since I believe in seizing the moment, I emailed him and he too in response to my email. It was an amazing experience to be able to connect after so long and to share my deep gratitude with him. I loved hearing what he had been doing for so many years with his life and about his current creative ventures. I highly encourage other students to seek out the teachers who inspired them. College My college, university and vocational school experiences have all been positive experiences. For college I attended Santa Monica College, studying guitar, and Diablo Valley College, northern cal, accumulating all necessary classes for my BA transfer units to John F. Kennedy University, where I received a BA in Liberal Arts, specializing in psychology. I continued on at JFKU in the somatic psychotherapy masters program and after two years transfered to the holistic health educator program and became ordained ...Expand for more
as a minister. During my master's program, I also attended the Acupressure Institute, taking over 1000 hours of various body therapy classes, most of which focused on Chinese Medicine and acupressure therapy. I have continued my education at other massage schools, under private instruction with other massage therapists, yoga instructors, tai chi instructors and spiritual practitioners. Education is always an ongoing process for me and I highly enjoy how it deepens me as a person, personally and professionally. Workplace Work has always been a big part of my life. I started with paper routes at age nine, moved on to babysitting, exercising horses, door to door sales, pet sitting, house cleaning and numerous sales jobs. I enjoyed being an apprenticing vet tech during high school until graduation, when I moved out of the house and needed a higher paying job, which ended up in cosmetic sales, makeup artistry and giving facials. I have been a secretary and receptionist, shelved books at the library, and packed boxes at UPS. However, there is nothing like making someone fully relax and working out the stress and pain for my clients. Practicing acupressure and massage therapy, teaching yoga, tai chi, relaxation classes and acupressure classes is amazingly rewarding. I love the spiritual solution-focused counseling I do with individuals, couples and families. I help them to get clear on what they want and need and provide solutions to obtain their goals. Pretty straightforward. There is something about helping an individual get into the present moment, either through their body, mind or spirit and come out of it feeling more whole. Of course being a mommy is work too and I love all the fun and challenges it offers. I can't say that I have acquired the skill of being as relaxed as I am when giving a massage during the times I am with my children. During a massage I can close my eyes and enjoy, take my time, be like the ocean on a windless sunny day. With my kids I can never really close my eyes and much of the time, aside from the fantastic play benefits/watching them learn and grow/learning from them, my enjoyment is coming from laughing at myself for trying to calm down when my kids are running in opposite directions and I have to chase them both down while I'm in heels!
