Deborah's Story
I must have inherited my grandfather's "wandering blood." I was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming. My dad was a sergeant in the Air Force. We moved to California, Panama, Texas, and Florida while he was in the service.
As an adult, I have lived in Arizona, Colorado, Virginia/DC/Maryland and California. I moved to Arizona with my boyfriend, who was a horse trainer. We moved together to Colorado. It wasn't a deliberate move; we had been planning to go back to Florida, but I wanted to drive back taking the northern route so I could see Cheyenne, where I was born. The Rocky Mountains were so beautiful that I had to stay.
I moved by myself to Virginia when I graduated from the University of Colorado, because I wanted to work for the Enviornmental Protection Agency and couldn't get a job with the local branch in Denver. I had a sister living in Northern Virginia, so I went there to pursue my dream. Unfortunately, President Clinton imposed a hiring freeze a month later. I lived in a couple different apartments in Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland while trying to adapt to the DC culture. I couldn't do it. Just too political and power-oriented for me.
I then moved to the San Francisco Bay ARea in California, where another sister and my brother were living. I worked for a while in the legal field, but didn't like it because I felt that I wasn't ...Expand for more
helping anyone or creating anything original. I then studied graphic design and got a job as a web designer. I really enjoyed the work, especially after I started working at Sega.com, where I got to created truly origina. artistic pages. Unfortunately, the dot-bomb sent me flying and I had to find a new field of work.
I had a gym membership from Sega and was doing lots of cardio to manage my depression from losing the job I truly loved. One day, out of the blue I asked the fitness manager if they ever used female trainers. He said yes, and told me that I need to pass a pre-test demonstrating knowledge of anatomy and physiology to get hired. I studied full-time for six weeks and passed the pre-test with flying colors! My career as a personal trainer was born.
After a while, I got bored just teaching people about nutrition and how to exercise. I wanted to help them improve their health using more tools than just exercise. I went back to school again and just finished the coursework for a Master's in occupational therapy. One more 12-week fieldwork experience, pass the national test, and I'm in!
I'll probably move again in a couple of years, though, cuz it's way expensive in the Bay Area! I'm currently thinking of Washington/Idaho, or perhaps the Northeast (New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Mass.), where the weather is not too hot.
