Deborah's Story

Life My sophomore year was my last to take classes at Forest, but in my heart and dreams I was there for my junior and senior year. I deeply missed the friends I had finally made and had to be separated from without so much as a good-bye. Being at Forest was where I wanted to be more than anything...but at that time, my dreams and imaginings were all I had because life sure didn't hold any dreams for me at this time. Life didn't seem too bright for me. I still wish I could go back and do the senior prom, or any other thing that I missed due to a series of unfortunate and tragic events that took my life into a whirlwind of pain and horror for many years. After getting away from that period of my life, I then managed to live my high school years vicariously through my children while chapperoning their high school events and became who I am today in spite of it all. I was a single mother of three - from 1980 until 2006. I recently remarried (April 1, 2006) to a man I have dated for almost 7 years. I work for a Medical Supply Company and work as a court appointed domestic violence advocate... and my husband works for a Law Firm in Atlanta. I graduated from Ohio State University (Anthropology / Business) and am beginning my masters program at Emery University in Atlanta in Anthropology and Behavioral Sciences this fall. After all these years I gave up on my childhood dream to be a pediatrician and decided that I wish to be a Forensic Physchologist. As in high school, my grades are good, I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa (National Honors Fraternity). I have three children and their spouses: Celeste (Anthony), Joshua (Marlene), Larry (Tona). I have 12 Grandchildren: Harrison (deceased, would be 16), Kourtland (14) Kierra (14), Norrin (11), Mariama (6), Jayden (4), Ethan (3), Sebastian (5), Cyan (3), Cadie (2) and Jay (1) and Kiley 6 (months) I have a black cocker named Astin Martin, I love to play Golf, watch NFL Football (Buccaneer Fan) NCAA Ohio State Buckeye Fan, and Formula 1 Racing. My husband races a Triumph at a local race track where I work corners and my only opportunity to be on the race track was when I rode in the pace car at the presentation lap for the Petit LeMans. I currently work for a medical company as a customer service rep, selling mammography machines and parts to repair them. School My best memories of high school were those spent in Mr. Joyners class and all the good friends that I made there or spending time out by the sinkhole. I loved Ms. Adkison, between her and Mr. Joyner, they are my two favorite teachers of all times. She really made Civics a fun class to be in. Also, skipping school and going over to the bowling alley during lunch and getting a pack of cigarettes and a charms sucker. And the day I spent with Helen Reeves at the Gainesville Mall. I had never been to a mall before and I was like a little girl in a candy shop. I look back now at all the things that I was so naieve about and wonder how I survived. My biggest crush was Scott. I...Expand for more
still think of him very often and wonder how his life turned out, I guess it's true you never forget your first love. If I could do it all over again? Uhmmm- I don't think so, I will simply hang on to the good memories I have from those years and trash the bad ones. Kids can still be so very cruel and I would never want to face the cruelty that some of the people I went to school with dished out because I was different than them and I was not as intellegent and/or priveledged as them. My most hated memory was being beaten up on a regular basis by some of the girls who would jump out of bushes and pummell me to the ground when I was walking home from Highlands Elementary...just because. I never fully understood their hatred for me, I simply wanted to be liked and included. My most shameful moment was being mean to two people that I have looked back and realized how much they cared about me. Greg and Graham, I would love to see them again and see how wonderful their lives turned out because they kept their Karma good and I know their lives were and are great. My apologies to them even now ... years later for my unnecessary meanness to them, at least that's how I see some of my actions, they hopefully saw them differently. For Mike (you know who), I still would like to have my ring back. Isn't it funny what you remember after all these years? Workplace My very first job ..hmm... a waitress in a local diner. I hated it. From there I moved to working in a plastic factory where we made the panels on the Maytag Washers. I was there for about 5 years until I decided my husband was the anti-christ and I walked out and divorced. I attempted to move from Ohio back to Florida and couldn't find happiness there either so back to Ohio I went. I went back to school beginning at Edison State college and then to Ohio State for some classes, graduating with a 3.97 GPA. I worked for Honeywell for about 10 years and moved to Atlanta where I worked for 5 years at Panasonic and then moved to my position I now have. On that note, another one of the most happy memories I had was going to Rheinaurs and trying on prom dresses with Helen Reeves and a couple of other girls and wishing with all my heart that I could go to the prom and wear one of the dresses, knowing that my parents would never let that happen. I still remember vividly the red dress and the bright red shoes that I tried on and fell in love with. It was grand to be included and to be able to put on those beautiful clothes for a change though even if I knew that it was a dream inside a department store that never would happen.I don't know what the girls I was with truly were thinking about me being there, but I felt like a princess for a day. Some of my dearest friends in my sophomore year were Carol, Donna, BeBee, Terry and Helen. They probably knew me better than anyone and one of the girls that had previously beat me up in elementary school on an almost daily basis, she and I became civil and could almost say we were friends.
