Deborah's Story

Life I married Alan in 1987 and we have 2 beautiful children (Cameron 1993; Zoe 1998). I own my own business, Suitcase Science, and I teach science courses at the Springfield Science Museum. My primary job is Administrator of the Safety Reporting System at Baystate Medical Center, as well as Data Analyst/Research Specialist. I am currently teaching Foundations and Methods of Research at a local college and have taught Biology and Chemistry at STCC, AIC, and Springfield College. I earned my PhD in Education. My son graduated from UMass-Amherst with a degree in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and a minor in Spanish. He hopes to go on to Brown to earn his PhD. My daughter is a senior majoring in communications and business in the honors program at Bay Path University. She is an independent artist with an on-line business with clients worldwide. It's bittersweet when your children become smarter than you are! I am still playing tennis any chance I get. For the past 20 years, I have been proudly involved with "MaryAnne's Kids", a CHD organization that helps foster children have as "normal" a life as any child. School I had 2 favorite teachers in high school: Mrs. Jeanne Wessman, my French teacher, and Mrs. Laurie Pieterse, my English teacher, who both inspired me ...Expand for more
to be all that and more. I kept in touch with Mrs. Wessman until she passed away. I was also close to Mrs. Curtis from Washington Street School until her death as well--We shared a birthday. Of course I would do high school all over again...it was a fantastic ride with a group of great people! College Most definitely, college was the best part of my youth. I made wonderful, enduring friendships, learned more than my brain could hold, and found love. What's better than that? Workplace My work has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people. I have seen people at the worst times in their lives, yet they were the strongest they had ever been. My patients inspire me. I always wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a fantastic idea, but funds were not abundant. However, everything in good time...I didn't go back to school until I was in my mid 30's. My friends would tell you I'm crazy, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as...crazy! I love to laugh and am so very grateful for every person in my life and for every day I have with my family. One of my very best friends from school is Barbara Brenner. She was the nicest girl in 7th grade. Non-judgmental and sweet. We are still best friends today.
