Deborah's Story

I was known as Debbie Rice in 1971( that was a long time ago) and I had been at the Bible School for 3 1/2 years altogether. and then I became a nurses' assistance at the hospital in Cambridge, Ohio. In 1974 I married a former clasmate, James(Ellwood) Betts' He was in the Army and in 1975 Crystal and I went to Germany for the next 2 1/2 years. Crystal is my first child. While in Germany I had 2 other babies, Robin and John. We came home to Fort Cambell, Ky. We were there for 1 year and 2 years in Tenn. Moving from state to state we finally settled in Martinsburg,W.Va., three years later we were divorced. In 1986 I met Alvin Gladhill and we had 3 children, Betty Marie, and a set of twins, Jeremy and Rebecca. Alvin had a son ,Mike, and he came to live with us. That made seven children, and all of them loved. In 1999 we moved back to Ohio because of my parents health. In 2000 Alvin's father passed away and our marriage began to die. In 2001, March 13, my father, Rev. Raymond Rice, passed away. on the same day my dad was laid to rest, my husband left and did not come back, leaving his son. In 2002 Mike chose to live with his father, and I discovered the other woman. We were divorced in 2003. My mother passed away Feb.7th, 2003. She had become my best friend, and my safe place for 29 years. I miss her very much every day. She had been the thread that held my family together. In 2005, while I was in litigation for my son , Jeremy(who is asperger's, an autistic) I became very depressed. I petioned the court that my oldest daughter have tempory custody of the children because of my mental health and health problems. The Court granted my plea, and I have been on my own...for the first time in my life. I have had to learn the meaning of autonomy, and the loneliness of being alone and the truth that we are never alone, He promised that," Lo I am with you always". I have hung on to that promise very hard in the la...Expand for more
st 5 years. I live in Cambridge, Ohio while my children live in Penna. and W.Va. I hear from them every week, or at least some of them. My twins, Jeremy is in College, Rebecca is a new Mom, a baby boy, one of my eight grandchildren. My oldest, Crystal, is the manager of a 7/11, second, Robin is the assistent manager of a Family Dollar Store, third is John and he is assistant manager of a Rent-A-Center,fourth, Mike, he is a closer of a McDonald's, fifth is Betty. She is a brittle diabetic and is unable to hold a job. She does babysitting in the home. I have already told you about my twins. Each and everyone of them is loved and I am proud of each of them. God was guiding me in ways that I did not understand and still do not. I have learned to be dependent on Him for my every need, and He has never let me down.He has been "a father, mother , sister and a brother" all of my life, even when I left Him down, He still loved me. In 2007 my baby sister died from the effects of Diabetics. Her heart gave out and she passed on. She left 5 children and 4 grand-childer. The desease is one of the worst. It has taken 2 of my family and is a constant threat to my daughter Betty. It also is a worry to my family for it can be passed on to others in the family, a genetic thing. I do miss some of the old days at the Bible School, the IHC conventions held in Huntington,W.Va. I miss the choir trips, Miss Smith, Ms.Sargent(Slinker now). Mr.and Mrs. Allison, and the most famous saying "NO PAIRING OFF!" lol and all of the friends and workers left behind. Last, but not least, the Trio and Quartet. We experienced some of the most wonderful times on those trips. In the past, during some of the most abuse I have had, I remembered those times and they got me thro' all of the abussive times I had. All my friends and memories of the meetings and the hand of God has kept me going thro' all of these years. He has been so good to me!
