Deborah's Story
Life
My life didn't start out great, but I learned from my family's mistakes and take life as a learning experience.
I'm very proud and privileged to have a daughter such as mine. She was born in El Cajon, CA in 1982. I wished her a better childhood than I, but her father and I divorced when she was only 18 mos. old so the "perfect family" was not to be for her, either.
We came back to NJ where I lived as a single parent, eventually going back to school to become an RN and provide her with a better role model. It paid off as she always excelled in school- especially math. (I don't know how that happened with a mother that always had trouble with numbers!). Anyway, she graduated HS in 2000 with honors, as always. She went to college in NY, the Rochester Institute of Technology and majored in (eeeech!) film her freshman year. I wasn't pleased, but always raised her to think and do everything independently so I did not interfere. Thank God she decided she didn't like lugging around all that equipment and changed majors in her 2nd year. Sh...Expand for more
e graduated with a BS in Information Technology in 2004 (even switching majors!) and her MS this year. She specializes in bioinformatics in order to get an edge and enter a relatively new IT field. She was chosen to go to Switzerland next month to present her master's project (see her bog at: juliamae.com).
If only I had been given encouragement when I was younger, who knows where I'd be because she's just like me, only better! I will attempt to add her most recent graduation photo with me in this site and hope I have some computer geek in me!
As an added note- I did go back to school, Fairleigh Dickenson University a few years back to become certified in Legal Nurse Consulting and have been working in a law firm in Morristown for the past 5 years. So I guess she got me thinking about going back to school again. Since our firm was growing so rapidly, the nurses were the first to telecommute 4/5 days/wk. This happened in 2004 when gas prices were just beginning to rise, so between that and risking my life on 287 daily, it was a Godsend.
