Deborah's Story

I've been living in Southern California for the past 30 years and loving it. I'm a retired legal assistant (thank you, Mrs. Varkula), and have one son, Brian, age 35. Initially, and at a very young age, I was married for five years to husband no. 1. It's not surprising it didn't last. We remain friends to this day. Then along came husband no. 2 and a union that endured 21 years. We raised my son together; bought houses together, traveled a lot, lived in Hawaii for two years, and had many other adventures together. So, what happened? I found out that it's true that after the nest becomes empty, you and your husband might not have anything to talk about, but hey, we're still good friends and even share a meal together each month, along with eight of our other closest friends. We call ourselves The Dinner Club. The Orange County Register even wrote a story about our auspicious group, which they put on THE FRONT PAGE of their newspaper. But I digress. In 2000, I fell in love for the very first time with a man I had known for most of my adult life, and it was like a lightning bolt hit me square in the chest. Unfortunately, that wonderful man passed away quite suddenly of a ruptured aorta, just six weeks before our wedding day. Needless to say, I was devastated. Do you know that there is no formal name to be found in any English language dictionary to describe a woman who was engaged to be married but had her fiancé' suddenly die a mere handful of days prior to the wedding? Anyhow, after rebuilding my life once again, two years go by during which time I am thoroughly convinced cupid's arrow will never ever come my way again. Of course, that's exactly when I fell in love for the second and very last time. I have now been married ten years to husband No. 3, who coincidentally possesses the best qualities of husbands 1 and 2. Brian is handsome, very bright and incredibly smart, (not the same things), plus, he can fix anything, understands everything, and possesses enough patience to live with me. He's my best friend, my rock in times of crisis, and best of all, I can reach over in the middle of the night to touch his hand, and every single time, he'll squeezes mine, and murmur "I love you most" in his sleep. I worked for many years as a legal assistant to a fewtop law firms, and then one day my husband said, "You know, you don't have t...Expand for more
o work if you don't want to." Never having discussed this aspect of our lives with him, it never occurred to me that I could retire and not impact our comfortable life together. It took a nanosecond for me to resign. How did I get anything done AND work full time is beyond me. My days are still so busy. We live such a full life together. Maybe I should have retired years ago! Funny, I can remember names of high school classmates, but not necessarily their faces. Well, none except maybe George Victor's face. I remember his red hair! I also remember Brenda Webb, with whom I shared a locker for a couple of years. She had the cutest bangs! I also remember the Vietnam War and a couple teachers who were there one year and gone the next. I remember a water pipe bursting one year and the gym floor flooded and seized up, making it unusable for a season. I remember how incredibly boring the senior year all night party was and that it turned out not to be so cool to be locked in the high school all night for a sleepover. I remember prom at the country club and how my date at the time was a 19-year old that resembled Bruce Jenner and the girls were all jealous, but in a nice way. I remember getting angry one day at school and actually walking out. When I got home, my mom said, "What are you doing here? Get yourself back to school right now!" So, I walked back the mile or so to the high school and when I got there, no one even noticed I had been gone! I remember my accounting teacher had to teach our class in the auditorium and it was hard to hear him because of the sound bouncing around the huge space. I remember our principal, Robert Schaublin, primarily because he was the same principal for me and for my seven older siblings dating all the back to when the high school was in a smaller red brick building on Jefferson, which I believe are now condos. I remember home economics class and Bruce Graham's face pressed against the glass door, and him making funny faces at me during my feeble attempts to use one of the school's ancient sewing machines. I recall senior year and attending half days while working part time for four engineers. I distinctly recall the feeling in my senior year that I would very soon embark on my adult life, and wondering what the heck that was going to be like. So far, life's been pretty damn good to me. Stay tuned.
