Deborah's Story
Life
I have been married to my husband since 1999. I nicknamed him The Buddha. (It can be very difficult to live with one so wise and even.) We have a 12 year old son who is a bit of a gentle, old soul. He is a vegetarian, loves children, animals, and writes screen plays. (He is a bit of a savant as he has been reading and writing since he was 2 years old.)
I am an art teacher, but still don't know what I want to be when I grow up! I am trying to decide whether I want to pursue a masters in cognition or counseling. I really just want to listen to my high school students, and empower/nurture their evolving selves. Art serves that purpose well - for now...
My newest interest/obsession is as big of a surprise to those who thought they knew me as it is to myself: Texas Hold'em Poker. My husband and I make several trips to Vegas per year. Hold'em has direct applications in my career. It has helped me to read my co-works and wait for an opportunity to present information in a form that they would best accept at a time they are most amenable (first to speak, bluff, and representing strength, are the poker analogs). Not new, but perceived in a new way; less personal, more goal focussed. I have always be...Expand for more
en a process person. This suited me well and kept me in the eternal present, but focussing on the product has become neccessary to organize and streamline my professional duties (committies, research, presentations and interfacing).
I have just recently started eating meat after almost two decades of vegetarianism. At this point in my life I find myself craving mischief and whimsy. I am ironically similar to my students in this regard. (Poker fulfills both categories and doesn't break any laws. <LOL>) This all sounds disturbingly like a midlife crisis. If so, I'll only live to be 78! I tell my senior students that I am going to come full circle and die a vegetarian, Buddhist nun. By then maybe I'll have integrated the two poles of my personality and serve as a model humanitarian that embodies a healthy balance of pointless fun and service to humanity; the Impish Buddha?
Workplace
I have been teaching art at NYOS Charter School since 1999. I love my students dearly, they keep me young and enthusiastic. Teaching is a thankless tiresome job that requires far too much personal time, but the pay off comes all day, every day - in hugs and unconditional love. Additionally, the vacation time is excellent!
