Deborah's Story
Life
A lot of you searching my profile are from Buena Park High School and Compton Sr. High. Just a note: I didn't attend either school; my older cousins (the Lees) attended Compton Sr. High, and my uncle was the principal, while many of my McComber Jr. High friends went on to Buena Park HS while I went to Sunny Hills in Fullerton, CA (graduated from Los Alamitos HS). I am listed as a "friend" of Compton SH and BPHS - sorry to confuse you!
Although So. Calif. was my home for 18 years, the Central Coast toward No. Calif. is my residence of choice. I'm passionate for thick forests, winding roads, azure blue skies following coastal fog in the mornings, mild weather, the ocean, & the Bay Area's liberal politics.
I grew up in Lakewood and Buena Park. My brother, Fred, is married to a Swiss woman, Maria, who has three grown daughters. Fred & Maria moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, in 2005. My half sister from my mother's first marriage is Suzanne Roady Ross. She & husband Jack have two children, JT Ross, who attended OSCHA & is soon to be a famous stage/screen actor, and Annaleise, who just graduated from my alma mater, Los Alamitos HS. She is a hairdreser, and will be married in August of 2006. My family is in So. Calif., Washington State & Kansas. Four of us live here in Santa Cruz County.
My paternal grandmother, Grace Hand Windisch, a Kansan who was a widow for 48 years, was a multi-talented woman who built her own china cabinets, made a perfect pie crust & sewed my dresses on a Singer treadle sewing machine. She worked at May Co. in Los Altos for several years, & loved Manning's Cafeteria in Long Beach. She lived in Belmont Shore on 59th Place between Alamitos Bay and the ocean until 1982.
Grace's daughter, my aunt Faustina, married Keith Lee, principal/coach at Compton Sr.High and Roosevelt Jr. High. Faustina was the high school librarian. Linda and Nick Lee, their kids, graduated from Compton Sr.High in 1958 and 1962. Linda married her high school sweetheart, Jim Smith, who had a long career with Pennzoil. Nick married the lovely Julie Sprague. Their cousins, RJ (Riley Jr.) & Mardelle Lee attended Compton in the 50's and 60's as well.
My maternal grandmother, Frieda Bergen, who emigrated from Russia as a child in the early 1900's & lived in New Jersey...Expand for more
, Ohio and New York, lived in Rossmoor Leisure World in Seal Beach until 1977. She loved to fix big meals and crochet afghans and slippers for the family. My grandfather, Frank Bergen, owned grocery stores in NY and Ohio, & worked at Sad Sack in Compton. He passed away in 1961.
My grandparents on both sides resided in Compton during the 1940's and 1950's. They arrived in So. California during WWII by train.
My parents, Wilfred (born in Missouri) and Sylvia (born in New Jersey) Windisch, married in 1951. Dad owned a photography counter at the Burke and Clegg Drug Store in Long Beach, then worked for Long Beach Construction Co. on Atlantic Ave. I attended Sunny Hills HS, Fullerton, 1968-1971, & Los Alamitos HS in 71-72. Moved to San Francisco in 72, & to Santa Cruz county in 81.
I've been employed by the County of Santa Cruz since 1984, currently as an acct'g tech in the Parks Dept. I part-timed for 19 years, for the Credit Bureau of Santa Cruz and West Marine, mostly because one job doesn't keep the wolves away here (it's expensive!). Now that I don't work two jobs, I'm discovering my life again!
I have been blessed by God to be reunited in friendship with my first love, now divorced, & also with someone who loved me all his life, now married. Every weekend when I am home, I enjoy the company of my best friends, whom I've known for 24 years and 10 years. I am single, never married or had children of my own. One of my cousins, Terry Lee Groll Lewis, lives in my home with her 16 year old son, Robin, whom I consider a nephew. I've helped raise him since he was ten months old. He's a beautiful young man, and I love him dearly. If not for him, I would never have had a child to raise in my own life.
I'm interested in music, movies, forest hikes, walks on the beach, photography, politics, fine art and am experimenting with water color. I cared for my invalid aunt for 3 years. My aim is to be a good friend to those who are around me.
Loving pets make my house a home. I have a cat, Maizie-Ann, who is orange and white like her predecessor, Sarah Boinhaadt. My cousin has a copper-colored chihuahua dachshund mix, Chechina, named for, you guessed it, Che Guevara. She's quite the revolutionary, protective and yappy little dog, but sweeter eyes, you've never seen!
