Deborah's Story
Life
I live in Athens, Georgia, and have worked in the Georgia court system for most of my adult life. Married and divorced twice, I have two grown sons, a daughter-in-law, and two beautiful granddaughters. My hobbies include restoring vintage sewing machines, amateur photography and gardening.
School
I have fond memories of working at the Nut House during our lunch hour at Roosevelt junior high school along with a group of other girls. I miss all of them.
College
I went to Kent State University for one year and thought it was the most depressing campus on earth. Bullet holes were still on view in a statue outside my dorm. The local community still hated the college and all students. I soon left and got married, but I did make a few friends there and in looking back on my transcript I have to admit that the honors classes I was taking were great. Maybe I should have given it more time.
Workplace
First Job - Wendy's on Maple Avenue in Zanesville.
Worst Job - I've never really had a bad job. I love to work and am a workaholic. But for awhile I worked at a Georgia sewing plant, running ten embroidery machines simultaneously on the 2nd shift. It was a very difficult job, but I learned a lot about people and have recently realized how much I loved, even then, watching the stitches come together to create somethi...Expand for more
ng beautiful.
Most Challenging Job - State Court of Clarke County, Georgia as our caseload grew overnight from an annual caseload of 500 to an annual caseload of 10,000-plus
Best volunteer experiences - Homeless Shelter Saturdays in Athens, GA (shout-out to Joel, the manager and still my neighbor, and to Joseph, the volunteer coordinator who truly changed my life); tutoring math and reading at an elementary school; volunteering at an organic farm.
Best Boss Ever - I have worked for a number of very fine judges and elected officials, including, some years ago, the first woman mayor of Athens, Georgia.
Military
My best and only military experience has been participating in antiwar protests.
Life Experiences
My best life experiences to date have been knowing and loving my granddaughters. I am so lucky to have them and hope I will be here to watch them grow up. Every moment with these beautiful little girls reminds me of my sons when they were they were the same ages, and fills my heart with love and hope. As a young parent I was always busy, always working, and never understood how important it was to cherish every moment of my children's lives. Being a grandparent is not a "do-over," but it certainly does offer the opportunity to savor life in a grand way. I believe that's why it's called being a "grand" parent.
