Debbie's Story
I am married and live in Tennessee. My husband retired from the Army in July 2009. I had three children, a son, Brian, who is 30 years old, married, a son Jeremy, who is 25 years old and I had a daughter, Tiffany, who was 12 years old when she died in 2003. I have one grandson, Joey who was born on Nov 7 2008 to my oldest son Brian and his ex-wife Michelle and a grandaughter Amelia who was born on Dec 9, 2013. I have been married twice, the first time from 1984-2000 and the second 2006-present.
I was in the Army from 1987-1990 and was a track vehicle mechanic (anyone that remembers me can see what a stretch that was, I truly was the Private Benjamin) which is where I met my first husband. He inprocessed me into my unit (apparently, inprocessing included getting married to him, hehe)
I have been fortunate to travel quite a bit with the military. My first marriage happened in Denmark, I have been to Germany, Paris, Venice, London, Amsterdam, Holland , Japan and a few other places overseas. In the states I have lived in upstate New York, Washington State, Georgia and now Tennessee.
I have only been back to Illinois about 6 times in the last 25 years, mostly because of my locations. My mom died in 1996, my dad died in 2008, my sister Carol died in 2013. My older brother Arthur lives near Lake Geneva, My younger brother Jim lives across the street from the house I grew up in on Decorah Ave.
I work for the government now as an accountant/auditor. I did not start working on my bachelor's degree until 2000 and it to...Expand for more
ok me 6 years of night school, but I finally got my degree in accounting in 2007. Before that I worked in a variety of jobs from construction to a staffing agency and finally ended up in the accounting field. It is by no means thrilling, but the money is good and it is a very safe and stable job. I always wanted to be a teacher, but sadly, things just never fell into place for that.
It is funny, as I look on here, I remember so few people. Of course I was never popular and did not have very many friends, so that could be part of the reason. Also, well, we are not getting any younger and I am blonde, so I can use that as an excuse too! I am sure that if I saw anyone in person, it would jog my memory.
I was not able to attend either of the reunions, I was in Germany both times and it just was not feasible to come. I am planning to attend the next one (if there is one, of course) and hopefully I will get to see some of my old acquaintances.
I was a very forgetable person in high school, or at least thought I was, so I am always flattered to see someone looking at my profile. I am also glad to see that so many people from the class of 1981 seem to be doing well, it always saddens me to read about the ones that did not make it..
I really do try to embrace the idea that life is just too short to sweat the small stuff, I am hoping that will keep the gray hairs and wrinkles away for a few years anyway.
I would love to hear from any of my old classmates (old is relative here, of course), so please feel free to write me.
