Debra's Story

Talk about deja vu...the photo was taken at my son Ryan's high school graduation in May, 2008, coinciding with his 18th birthday. Ryan, named for my father, is on break between semesters from his first year at Virginia Tech. He's a great, down-to-earth, talented, smart, kid (not that I'm prejudiced lol). The long-haired, bearded hippie to his left is my husband of twenty years, George, a hard working free spirit who definitely provides the much needed yin to my yang (and vice versa) who brought me to his small rural hometown of Cambridge on Maryland's Eastern Shore to live in 1995 (Harriet Tubman's birthplace, for any of you history buffs.) We met in Clemson, South Carolina, where he was working on a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering; I had traveled south with my first husband following my graduation from Penn State's School of Journalism and a stint working at the Jewish Y in Philadelphia--husband number one had gotten a job as a dairy science professor at Clemson; I ended up typing papers for business professors whose political leanings were slight...Expand for more
ly to the left of Atilla the Hun lol, but politics aside, met many really good souls and southern gentlemen (and women). I also was able to pursue a Master's Degree in History along the way, though I never completed it (got as far as writing my thesis!) I became a mom at age 35 when fortunately I could still manage to roll down a hill sideways with my son without needing hip replacement surgery. I was pretty much a stay at home mom but worked as a newspaper reporter for a year when Ryan entered preschool. For my fiftieth birthday, I thought about getting a tattoo, but held off, deciding instead to pursue a writing career in earnest. I became a freelance writer doing features and promotional articles. To help pay down the debt I sadly incurred from my largely income free romp as a stay at home mom, I'm now working at a local library along with my freelance writing projects. No matter where I've lived, I've always remained a rabid Phillies fan, an ecstatic one last October. (Wonder how my husband would feel about a Cole Hamels tattoo for my 55th birthday lol)
