Debra's Story
I left Mount Juliet High School because it was not me. They gave me a hunter's license, despite my shots being far from the targets. I had never seen a gun before. Sometimes, my shoulder still hurts. I grew up poor on both sides of my family, especially in inner city East Nashville. I wouldn't change it for the world. I thank God everyday for Stratford and the staff who risked their lives for us. I pray every time I hear sirens. Anyone who tried to tell me I couldn't make it out knew nothing of my determination. I graduated from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2000 with my Bachelor's of Science and Social Work and earned a School Social Work Certificate. I worked with coed adolescents in substance abuse treatment and elementary inner city school students in college. I served in the United States Peace Corps from 09/11/2001-2003. I taught Health and Family Life Education to coed students and focused on STIs/HIV/AI...Expand for more
DS prevention. I met my husband Andy Mahadeo on 09/11/2001, who is another teacher. The people are loud, which is cultural. Until we see on the unpredictable television what we think are planes hit the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Pennsylvania field, there is the loudest silence I have ever heard. I won a free NY trip and missed the Twin Towers. There were posters everywhere of missing people and plywood you could sign. I got married in Grenada, West Indies for the legal part, a red and gold sari in Guyana, South America, and a Tennessee wedding. I graduated from the University of South Carolina-Columbia with my dual Master's in Public Health/Social Work in 2006. I miscarried our first son, have a daughter, and lost our second son shortly after delivery. I am very happy with all I have accomplished. It took determination, focus, and student planners.
