Yeah, it'll sound hokey but they were the best of times/the worst of times. A time in my life so pivotal, so alive, so full of memories, of ghosts -- I never forget it. Each weekend I pass McKinley on the subway. Now destined to be a technology center, I know it will NEVER be as alive as it was 1967-1970. I loved it, I hated it, I miss it. Lunch hour was truly a "gathering of the clans" -- I still remember how small, boiled potatoes could fly across a room like little white cannonballs. Art class with Mr. Sevula was probably my favorite class, creative, imaginative, and all too short.
I remember Dr. King's assassination and how we were turned out into the streets to "go home". I rem...Expand for more
ember the National Guard bivouacked in the parking lot with howitzers and barbed wire surrounding them. I remember the school dances, I remember the graduation. I remember leaving those doors for the last time as a student on my way to Howard University.
The funny thing is my oldest daughter attended McKinley and graduated shortly before the school closed. Hers was a time filled with metal detectors, police in the hallways, and a friend dying after playing with a gun and accidently shooting himself in the stomach.
It doesn't seem fitting to me that a place so full of energy from generations of teenagers should now become a corporate haven. Better that than a rotting shell of a building or a huge liquor store, eh?
