Delando's Story
Life
I have four children who are all married and have presented me with 7 grandchildren. The oldest grandchild was married in July 2004; the rest range in age from Senior in high school down to Kindergarten. My children live in Kansas, Texas and Florida so none are here in Colorado with me. My wife originates from Longmont, CO. Her 4 children (my stepchildren)all live in the Denver area. None are married but a couple weddings are planned for 2005.
We both worked for Continental Airlines and retired a few years ago. We try to plan at least one major excursion (trip) each year. Last one was a 17 day excursion to Finland, Lapland and Norway. Great countries and people.
School
After high school graduation in 1951 I attended Brown-Mackie School of Business in Salina, KS. Early in 1953 I studied airline operatons at Central Technical School in Kansas City. I was hired directly from the school by Continental Airlines in June 1953.
College
During my career with Continental Airlines I was transferred to Denver. While working full time I enrolled at the Univ. of Colorado and earned my B.S. Degree in Business. Those were very busy years as working full time and carrying full hours of study left little spare time. Fortunately, my business work experience was beneficial.
Workplace
I joined Continental Airlines in 1953 and worked for them 48 years. Nearly...Expand for more
all my work duties were customer service related. Most enjoyable job with Continental was when I served as Director-Passenger Service aboard domestic and international flights. In this position I had the opportunity to travel to the South Pacific, Mid Pacific, Southeast Asia, Japan, Europe, and nearly everywhere in the United States. I met people of many cultures and personalities.
I'm now retired, living in beautiful Colorado, visiting my children and grandchildren, assisting my church as a Eucharistic Minister and Reader, serving as a Board Director on Assoc. of Retired Employees of Continental, and doing some occasional travel. My health is generally good and I'm enjoying the retired life.
Military
My military service was with the United States Marine Corps. After basic training I worked at base headquarters at Camp Pendleton for less than a year. I applied for specialized training in Naval Observer School, was accepted and transferred to Aerial Navigation School at Cherry Point, NC. Upon completion of a very intense 16 week training course I earned my wings. I served the remainder of Marine career as a Navgator with a Marine Airwing aborad cargo aircraft which transported troops, military supplies and heavy equipment for both the Marines and Navy. Upon completion of military service I returned to Continental Airlines remaining with them until my retirement.
